High School - Directions
« on: September 10, 2008, 02:42:32 pm »
I thought that my students would enjoy this lesson because they always associate Americans with the city of Los Angeles.  In the lesson I presented them with the powerpoint slideshow, illustrating different tourist destinations in Los Angeles. After explaining the tourist destination I showed them the map of where the tourist site was located.  Using cardinal directions I would explain for example: that it is North of highway 15 and east of highway 101 near bakerstown.   I let the students know before the presentation that they should pay close attention to each location and what tourists travel there to see.  Then afterwards I handed out a printed copy of the map I used in the powerpoint to each student, on the maps I had circled one star indicating where that student was located in Los Angeles.  They were instructed to get up and move around the room and find at least one person that was at each location.  After finding that person they should ask them what they are doing there, the expected response is what they learned most tourists do at that location.  Then they were supposed to ask where it is located on the map, and wait for a response.  Finally the students are supposed to decide on a meeting place somewhere on the map and then give directions to each other for getting there.

I found that most of the classes enjoyed this activity, some of the lower level classes had a hard time understanding the slideshow.  I later just focused on saying keywords for each destination during the slideshow instead of reading the slide verbatim.

Giving directions - Seoul Subway and In the street
« Reply #1 on: September 09, 2010, 01:21:42 pm »
Here is a lesson I put together for my highschool class.  Lots of speaking involved.
I modified a couple 'giving direction' lessons from the middle school section.

I included ppt and handouts.

The last page of the ppt is a seoul subway map that I would laminate (along with the street map) and give out to each group.

how did you get around it printing in black and white? or do you have colour printers? my kids got SUPER frustrated. Though it is first thing on a Monday morning and they don't know the Seoul subway system at all.

I had a similar problem with the map being confusing as it takes them along time to workout the romanization of the Korean names. So what I did was maximize a small part of the map and printed it in colour, making sure there was enough variation on the map to make interesting

This elementary link is somewhat similar as far as giving directions to other people.  Some of the map exercises could be helpful... http://waygook.org/index.php/topic,1154.msg14084/topicseen.html#new

I did a very similar thing with my students only I used Busan's subway map. It only has 3 lines so color isn't as much of an issue and its a lot simpler. Its big enough that you can still easily teach the same vocab without the problems of having to choose a cluster of Seoul's.

Man, you guys are awesome. It took me a while to sort through all those PPT's and Word documents, but there's a lot of good stuff to put to use. Thanks for all the help! I'd be interested in any other resources for the same book series if they are on the site here somewhere.

You are awesome.  I was just thinking that I wanted to do a lesson on directions.  Now I can do my coworker's home for his graduate class and make it out to Itaewon tonight.

Happy St. P day!

2 week lesson on cities and giving directions
« Reply #11 on: April 27, 2011, 03:20:08 pm »
I work at a boys high school and I used these lessons for a range of upper and lower classes. It worked well for all classes. The upper classes found it pretty straightforward, but practice on these simple but commonly used sentences can never be a bad thing. For the lower classes it was really important to  spend time going through the vocabulary and the examples and making sure the students understood. I found that all students that paid attention and put an effort into it were capable of doing it, no matter what their level.

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you have an feedback :)

Week 1

For this lesson we go through some buildings vocabulary and then the students design their owns cities using the vocabulary. The next step is to have them describe their city to their partner who will then copy it.

1.   Give students the handout: two identical empty maps of a city
  • There will be an A sheet and a B sheet. Both will have two empty maps of a city.
Students design their own city on the upper map by filling in building names.
Students must keep their city design a secret. They should not show it to their partner.
2.   Students describe their city to their partner
  • Students take turns describing their cities to one another. The other student can fill in the building names on the bottom city map on their sheet.

Week 2

For this lesson students use the same sheets as the previous week. It is not possible to do this lesson unless students have done the previous lesson. To ensure that the students do not forget to bring their sheets I collect them at the end of the first lesson then bring them for the second lesson myself.

We go through some vocabulary and practice a few scenarios before students give directions to their partner in their city.

You can check the notes on the slides for some clarification.

Thanks for sharing this, you've obviously put in a lot of time and effort into this lesson plan.  Will feed back if I use it!
