Help with bomb games
« on: September 11, 2013, 01:28:49 PM »
Ok, so I am sure this is a totally special needs moment, but I just don't really get how people are using the bomb games. I am guessing using teams? So does only 1 team play at a time and the others are just siting there waiting for their turn? Or are they all playing at the same time?

Do the student have to shout or write the answer before the bomb goes off? Or do they only have that amount of time to decide it? Also what do you usually do for points?

The set up looks they should be somewhat fun, but I just don't really see how to make it really work well with a classroom of 30 students. So any help of what has worked for you would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!

1) Arrange your students into 4-6 teams.

2) Each team takes a turn to choose a question. I ask them to verbally tell me the answer.
If they answer it they will receive points / chance to earn a bonus prize

Use a scoreboard on the chalkboard.

To distribute points: Some bomb games have points as a reward system inside the game.
Usually, games will have two icons on the bottom...one for right answer and another for wrong answer. Click on the icon that is for the right answer to hyperlink to a bonus page where points will be displayed. Apply to the scoreboard.

I always give +2 points no matter what game I play...if they answer right, I reward immediately with points.

The scoring system usually follows:
+ points (gain points)
- points (lose points)
Switch points
Destroy a teams points
BOMB: (the team which finds a bomb during their turn loses all their points)
Nuclear: All teams, regardless of turn, will lose their points.

I have 30-36 students in every class. Using the bomb games in the "traditional" way has never worked because the wait time is way too long. My solution is to change all the slides from enemies or bombs or steals into points. I have teams of two, and all teams write every answer on their whiteboard, then hold it up at the same time for me to visually check (just to keep them honest.) If their answer is correct, they get the points. This way everyone is participating the entire time. Often times this creates ties for high score, but there are lots of ways to solve this problem if you are giving out prizes.

Here is my process:

1. I divide the class into 4 teams. I'll choose someone randomly from each team and have them do rock, scissors, paper to determine which team goes first.

2. I start with the team who won R,S,P, and go turn by turn. In my classes at least, the wait time isn't that much of a problem and students are always into the game even while other teams are playing their turn. A linear game takes the element of choice away from the students, and allowing the students to try to answer all at once is to chaotic and confusing.

3. Whichever team's turn it is, that team has 5-10 seconds to give an answer. If they are wrong, and/or run out of time, then the question is up for grabs by other teams (they can only raise their hands once the other team fails.)

Once a team answers the question correctly, everyone in the class must repeat the answer.

4. Enjoy the game and watch teams relentlessly attack and steal from each other.
