Agree and Disagree - "Scrubs" Class
« on: September 11, 2013, 04:11:29 PM »
Here's a lesson I just ran with my Grade 2 Middle Schoolers and it went over Unbelievably well. The students loved the show and responded really well overall. They laughed through the whole episode and really got into the discussion. They all love Dr. Cox now.

I use Season 1 - Episode 5 of "Scrubs" to teach Agree and Disagree.

Dr. Cox believes patients come first at the expense of money and rules, Dr. Kelso thinks money and the hospital come before patients' individual interests.

It really got students thinking about difficult issues and they practiced Agree and Disagree by choosing a side to defend. You can even make it a classroom debate by making small groups and assigning a side. I chose to run it as a more free form discussion.

I decided to run it as a cultural insight lesson since "Good Doctor" is now the big drama in Korea so they can compare and relate them.

BE WARNED: My class is pretty mature for their age and my coteachers trust me pretty well. The episode has two substories - Elliot flashes patients to heal them psychosomatically and Turk tries to impress Carla and there are mentions of sex. Nothing is revealed on screen and the Korean translation of the dialogue is actually much tamer than what is said in English, so there was no real problem showing anything to the students. You can show only choice clips if the substories are an issue, just screen the episode first and clear it with your coteacher. Mine were fine with all of it so I just ran the whole 22 mins.

PPT attached.

very nicely put together powepoint  8) it's always nice to see when people put a lot of effort into their PPTs rather than just throwing together a few slides of plain text on a white background like a lot of people. i know not everyone has the time to do flashy PPTs, but it's still nice to see when someone does.

my middle school students are unfortunately a bit too low level for this, but i'm definitely going to do it with my high school students.

thanks for posting this  8)

Just a heads up, this episode is pretty sexual. You'll see flashing, sex talk, and various objects found and removed to the "ass box." (Try answering the question of "why?" from your students like I did.) I thought my high school (intermediate) kids were pretty mature as well, but they were pretty shocked by what they saw. Make sure you watch the full episode and find the spots to skip first.

^^^this. This episode is inappropriate for middle schoolers without some skillful skipping.
