Caribbean Islands Lesson (NEED HELP AND ADVICE)
« on: September 16, 2013, 11:32:26 AM »
I have to teach an open class at my middles school on Sept. 27th.
(I still wish I would have done this earlier in June or July). The class I will
teach will be the first year middle school students.

I am still considering teaching an open class lesson on The Caribbean Islands. The
duration of the class is only 45 minutes so because of that, I only made my powerpoint
with introducing only 12 different island nations in the Caribbean region.

Here are my questions:

Will these Korean kids have trouble remembering or pronouncing the names of
these different Caribbean countries (such as Antigua or Dominica)?
What should be the target language regarding the Caribbean Islands? Prepositions?
What kind of activities should I engage them in?
Would it even make sense to teach them the Caribbean Islands?

Your feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You.

this seems like quite a random topic to me. can't really see the point in teaching it to them. not only that, but a ton of native English speakers can't even pronounce the names of the islands correctly, let alone 1st grade MS students.

have you given any thought to this lesson at all besides picking some random topic? you would be more likely to get people to help you if you thought of some activities yourself and posted them here for critique, rather than expecting the community to essentially plan your lesson for you. sorry if that seems harsh, but that's the way your post comes across.

my advice: scrap this topic and choose something else.

I do think they will have problems pronouncing and remembering the names of the islands. Unless, you made some sort of theme.

If you don't have a particular theme, it could be quite a challenge.

Personally, I'd go with pirates - not just a general statement!

Intro with the film trailer, introduce the landscapes and major features of different islands - perhaps with pros and cons for piracy. Maybe do a pirate map themed 'drawing from dictation' where you describe a map, with rivers, mountains, forests, nodes, prepositions, etc., and the students have to listen and draw it all down, (and then compare with your original image).

Then have the students imagine that they are pirate captains and have them design the perfect Caribbean island - with labels, and a written description. Have a couple of the more imaginative ones present to class at the end.

@Roselinda, I would go with your idea. However I would only do that for my hour long afterschool class.
All I need to do is an activity or a game that will get them going.
