Mixed Korean/Japanese Class (Advice)
« on: September 17, 2013, 12:13:50 PM »
So my school was selected to have some visiting Japanse students attend my English class.  Been trying to figure out a decent lesson plan other than having a dokdo/takeshima debate and watch chaos ensue.   :P  but all kidding aside i've been banging my head against the wall trying to figure out something fun and lacking of any political controversy for them to participate in.  My korean students have a pretty high speaking ability and i've been told the visiting japanese students ability is really low. I would really like to present this class as a cultural exchange where they could really get to know each other well.  My only idea so far is maybe having them teach each other some traditional games and maybe create like a fusion game. has anyone ever done a class like this before?  any suggestions are welcome.

Talk about anime, both should love it.

For example: Who is your favorite One Piece character? What do you think will happen next? How long will it take them to find the One Piece?

Or Minecraft. Minecraft is universal. Have them share their harrowing stories of survival. Perhaps as a comic strip that focuses on whatever English phrase or lesson you're working towards that week.

Or learning a song, or writing one to music they already know around a theme, such as write a song about food with the theme to Batman.

Not sure what grades you are teaching but if their level is high enough you could do something about rules or laws.

What I have done before is I showed them basic sentence structures using MUST and CAN/CANNOT and talked about laws in different countries.  Like driving age, mandatory military service, etc.  Just things that vary from country to country.  You can ask the Korean students and Japanese students about laws in their countries and compare them.

Then, prepare a list of questions and make groups of 4 students.  (have some Korean and some Japanese students in each group).  Ask them to make a new country.  What is the name of the country?  Which language will it speak?  What will the driving age be?  Will military service be mandatory?  What will the flag look like?

I have done this with high school before and it worked good.  At the end, I had the groups give a presentation about their country.  Some of the Ss had very funny or creative answers.  (National language: body language)

If your students level is not that high, just get them into small groups and have them work together with students from the other country.  This will force them to use English to communicate and be a good cultural experience for them.  You could talk about food from their countries and make a restaurant menu, listing prices in Korean Won, Japanese Yen, and US Dollar.  Talk about how much a McDonalds hamburger or a bottle of water costs in different countries.
