Going to the doctor lesson?
« on: September 17, 2013, 05:09:41 PM »
So, I'm going to be one of those EPIK applicants that bugs you guys because I'm nervous about the lesson plan part of the application. I wanted to do a unit on health, and have a single lesson focus on going to the doctor. Do you think that would be okay? I think it might work, but I wasn't sure.

I've been looking at different sample lessons and have gotten some great tips/ideas. I was wondering if anyone had any advice about how simple to make an elementary level lesson about going to the doctor? I wanted to focus on identifying some basic body parts (nose, eyes, ears) and then symptoms (stuffy, itchy, achy), also having a role-playing aspect where the students are doctors and patients.

What do you think? Too much for one lesson?

Thank you for reading, and thank you for any answer you can give me.  :azn:

not so sure about this.

don't worry so much, you aren't actually teaching this lesson, just follow a format, make a fun activity, have loads of student talk time.  EPIK will spend roughly 10 seconds looking at this while on the phone with you. they usually don't look at applications until the interview starts. just make sure you are able to explain the decisions you made to the interviewer.

Okay. Yeah, that was the part I was unsure about. I'm definitely worrying too much on this, haha. First time jitters!

I've heard of people being rejected based on their lesson plan, so it's making me nervous.

Back to the drawing board then, sort of. More like altering a few activities, like the role-playing game.

Thank you for the reply!

I actually did something very similar  for my SMOE lesson plan a few years back. Health focus. Going to the doctor. Vocabulary for symptoms/body parts and role play between doctor and patient. I was accepted.

Sounds like you have a good idea for a lesson.  And its good that you have some key words for the students to learn.  For elementary it helps to have some key sentences they can use, and doctor lessons work great with the "you should ..." sentence structure.

You should get some rest.
You should eat more Vitamin C.
You should drink lots of water.
You should take some medicine.
etc.

Good luck with your lesson.
