I had to choose which ones were good, better and best. I can't remember which ones as my CT took them.  :-[

Just had a look through with the CDs at YBM, Cheonjae (2 different ones) and Daegyo. My school uses Daegyo and after comparing them, I think Daegyo is best for phonics but content wise they seem totally similar (except the one with the chapter "TA-DA! I have a pencil" because we're not training magicians).

YBM's phonic section doesn't really make sense to me because you don't study similar phonic sounds together b/p, c/g, r/l but just pick letters at random while the Cheonjae books skip from the alphabet directly into random letter and even compound phonics (they also repeat the same phonics in the book "oo" and "d", which is unnecessary).
My students would get confused by that, I think.

I'm hoping my coteach chooses Daegyo again but apparently one of the Cheonjae books is most popular because of teacher's resources so I think she might go with that.

The process to choose these books was pretty bad. My school spent about 5 minutes deciding on the music book and 5 minutes to narrow our choice for English books to two (I chose the one most similar to the current book in terms of format, but some of my co-teachers wanted another book). I wish we had more time to choose. Choosing a book which a student will use for an entire year should take at least the whole day to look at. I'm all for a fast paced life and doing things quickly but not when it comes to choosing a book.

Choosing a book should not be based solely on the student's textbook. We should have access to the CD/DVD and teacher's guides and be given time to look at them. Also, cars should obey stoplights, motorcycles should stay off the sidewalk, and people shouldn't piss in the street. But hey! Welcome to Korea!

I was told to pick the top 3 companies of the 5 we were given and to order them as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd best. As I implied above, I was given no CD, DVD, or teacher's guide. I was given enough time to examine them but now two other teachers are rethinking my choices for whatever reason.

I didn't like the daegyo book.  YBM's book is okay but i am not happy with their songs or chants...and the way the alphabet is taught in that book is beyond logical. I would say any of the cheonjae books are good.  Daegyo book doesn't have a workbook at the back.  The other books do. I think this is helpful.  Also i have been using YBM and Cheonjae and cheonjaes songs and chants are better and more interactive (i enjoy getting the students to dance like the characters and the students enjoy the dance contests).  Now this may not be the case with the new books as I haven't been able to check out cd-room.  But more than likely i would suspect this is still the case, imo.

recently i was able to have a brief look at all the books, and I actually liked the Daegyo the best. My opinion is just based on a brief look-over of all of them though, and I wasn't able to examine the teachers' guides or CD-ROMs.

one of my co-teachers who is a veteran English teacher always raves about the Daegyo books too. So I'm sure you made a good decision Summer  8)

Yes completely new books. New characters, new chapters - everything. It is not just English but a bunch of other subjects as well (including music and PE). None of the Korean teachers understood why they are labelled 3-4 #1 and #2 and not 3rd grade and 4th grade either.

We had to choose ours earlier this week (without the CDs and with only the student books to look at).

I don't think any of them are as good as our current books so I am not very happy about having to change them.

the way it was explained to me is that the curriculum is being changed completely for grades 3 and 4, so that students will stay in the same homeroom for two consecutive years. so instead of two separate years, each year will be two halves of one grade.

i can't remember which book my school chose, but i was able to give my opinion. i think we went with one of the cheonjae books. they are a HUGE step up from the awful daegyo books that we were forced into using for past few years. the new books that daegyo had on offer were just as bad too.

I can't find the link path you described. Where is the link to view the pdf of the textbooks?

It looks like they changed the site. Maybe it was only available during that short time?
