Grade 6 Afterschool - Need a reading level test and novel
« on: March 22, 2011, 07:49:23 AM »
Hey all

I have an after school class starting this week and I was hoping to do the following:

Use a small book that the kids would have to read a section of every week and then come to class and do activities/games about that section of the book.

But my school has fairly low level students and i need to get an idea about their reading level before i start this.  So i was wondering if anyone knows a good reading test that would help me judge their level and any books/novels people have used with this level of students.

Thanks for any help you got!

I was in the same predicament as you. I wouldn't call it a predicament now that I think about it, I really wanted to teach an after school reading class.  I originally wanted to do something like James and the Giant Peach but after looking at the text again it was obviously too hard for my students.

I asked one of my better English students to read a few pages out of Diary of a Wimpy Kid and he could read and understand from what I could tell but he said he couldn't explain things back to me without using Korean.

I have to go to class now but I'll try to link the topic I had earlier.

The San Diego quick reading assessment is an easy way to find the reading level of your students.  It's pretty simple to give as well.  Just google the name.  I used it when I taught special education.

I have no reading test suggestions.

You might want to take a look at the Dragonbreath books by Ursula Vernon if your kids end up testing around a grade 4/5 level.  They mix the usual text with comic-style pages every couple of chapters.  The books are Dragonbreath, Attack of the Ninja Frogs, Curse of the Were-Weiner, and Lair of the Bat Monster (or something similar -- it just came out).

I was reading some information on book reports and saw Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events ... sounds interesting. This might appeal to the death and gore in students. Also, there is a movie.  ;D

The website has a good format for the students to possibly follow allong.

Definitely read Lemony Snicket yourself before buying additional copies.  I hated it.  The movie was okay (they threaded together the first few books to make a coherent story), but the first book was all over the place.  It's intentionally very disjointed, which can be a bonus or a problem.
