Here is a grade 3 unit 2 [bandi/tomtom] 'What is it? It's a...' animal guessing game to coincide with the animals learned during the chaper [dog, cat, lizard, spider, bird & fish].  I have the final round as Zebra so there can't be any ties.

Adapted from a powerpoint originally posted by crantor!  Thnx!

To start, we played the Elephant Song.  Then a PPT with animated pictures and sounds about pets.  I also put in animals from the song even though they're not pets.

Lastly, we did a coloring/make a fan activity.  Me and my co-teacher cut and pasted the animals, then photocopied that paper so it wouldn't take so much class time.  We also changed tortoise to turtle.

Simpsons Donut game I made today for my third graders. The older kids love this template and I haven't seen it very often!

Vocab - cat, dog, iguana, elephant, pig, spider, monkey, fish, rabbit
Key sentences - what's this? what's that? hello, good bye, what's your name? my name is [Andy], who is he/she (using characters from the book.)

Hope this helps someone, somewhere!

There is some good stuff here thanks.

Here are a couple of things I have made.

A ppt for some basic animals for the first lesson.

The difference between this and that and some more animals for the second lesson.

A what's missing game and a snakes and ladders board game.

For the second class I will play a guessing game using flashcards. I will stick the flashcards on the board and have 1 student choose one and tell me what it is. They will ask another student "what's this?" That student will guess "It's a cat.". The first student will answer yes or no. If no, they will ask another student. If yes, that student gets to choose the next card. It is a very simple game but I have found the students really like it and they are doing all the talking not me which is great.

I am also thinking of making animal masks from here instead of using the ones from the book for period 4.

Wow, lots of goodies! Here is a game of Go Fish and a PPT explaining the rules, both of which I made using the templates provided by duchessrachel. The card game uses the vocab from this chapter and the names of the characters from the previous chapter. Pros: gets the kids talking a lot, which means me and ct talking less, and changes things up a bit in class (we usually do ppt games). Cons: takes some prep work (have to laminate/cut out cards) and have to explain directions thoroughly, if not, disaster.

Great idea, with the card game. Do you think you could post a compatible version? I can't save the document, my version is too old, I guess! ^^

Thanks for the idea. ^^

For this section, I taught two lessons. One which focused on the difference between "this" and "that" and then one that focused on the difference between "a" and "an." The chapter would have been too easy for my students if I didn't add animals and use a different approach.

Here are the PowerPoints and game piece I created.

Here's a hangman flash game my co-teacher showed me. You need to edit the "data.txt"

The game is completely customizable. You can add your own animals. My kids seem to love playing hangman.

Enjoy!

Whispering game!

Have about six pictures of animals taped to the wall.  Then get you students into two even lines. Tell two students from both lines the name of an animal, then they must whisper the name of the animal all of the way down the line.  The side that whispers the fastest must run to the correct card.  The student who gets to the card first must answer my question, "Whats that?", they respond, "It's a ____". The first team to a set number wins a prize.
