Syllables Lesson
« on: March 22, 2011, 06:05:56 PM »
I used to teach syllables by having the students clap them out, then I realized that it wasn't very effective because the students were still using the Korean way of pronouncing the words when clapping... so I came up with this lesson.

It's not necessarily the most thrilling lesson, but it has been pretty effective.

Attached are also the worksheets I gave for homework... which I didn't make, but I don't remember where I got them!

important lesson topic that is often ignored!
You may wanna have a look at the 'silly bulls' game template posted here, under 'review games'  http://waygook.org/index.php/topic,3718.msg19098.html#msg19098

Glad you guys like it. There is one thing not in the rules that I explain to them before we do the contest, which is to be careful about "e" in words like "every" where the middle "e" is silent.

Also, if anyone adds to the lesson, please share it here!

I know it's been a fair white since this thread has been used; but it's one of the first links when you search Syllables so I think this is the best place to post my modification of the above Syllables lesson (with additions from a mixture of ppts I found around the place).

There are two videos that go with the lesson which seem to be a hit with the students.

The first is from a TV show called Infinite Challenge which is pretty funny showing an example of how a foreigner can be confused because of pronunciation/syllable difference.https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_Z8a3g817tAb0VWR3FMLUxSNlE/edit?usp=sharing

Second video is of a Korean drama called Dream High where one character calls out another character for this pronunciation/syllable difference. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_Z8a3g817tANE00YkxlZDFhdnM/edit?usp=sharing

Cheers

Thanks for the above posts. Those videos are great..I wish I had seen them before I did my lesson!

Here is my lesson. I do an intro on syllable counting and then I teach them about word stress. We count the syllables and then learn how to place word stress accurately. Use whatever vocab list your students are currently studying.

Thank you for the videos! The link to the k-drama video would not work for me, but the  infinite challenge video is a huge hit!!
