Has anyone tried to teach a class using a movie, working scene by scene?
I was talking to a friend about how important motivating learners is. She said you retain information longer if you are interested in the topic you're studying, which I completely agree with based on my own experiences in school. I thought, how can I motivate my younger students? How can I get them to speak more English in the classroom?
I teach Grades 1-6, and 3-4 and 5-6 are combined classes (but still very small, only about 15 students total).
We could reenact scenes from the movie, read them with partners, and I could base my lessons around vocabulary from scenes.
What do you think? Has anyone tried something similar? I'd like to say more, but I worry this post is getting too long...

I have used the Pixar shorts lesson with great success in my sixth grade classes. The students are split into groups of 5-6, they watch the short and then write down every noun, verb, and adjective they see/hear. Then we go five or six rounds where each teams says one word, but if another team wrote down that word it doesn't count. By the end the kids got really creative and I was impressed with what vocabulary words they knew.
This might be an activity you can use for one of the scenes from your movie.

Ah, that's great! Thanks for sharing. I think I might try that later this week.

I LOVE this idea!
I've used Pixar videos in the past, but I wrote simple sentences about the video that they had to put in order and then read out loud.

Charlie and Lola episodes (available on YouTube) are really cute and perfect for this kind of thing too!

I have used the movie
Fat Albert (2004
in class, and in my opinion it worked surprisingly well.
You can download from ******** (you know where) and it comes with English subtitles, NOT Korean subtitles."why no Korean subtitles teacha? " "Because I want you to learn and actually
read
English, in my class.
The movie is easy to understand, and no inappropriate scenes or language.
Each 10min I would stop the movie and ask a few questions.
Depending on the level and type of students, one could:
- ask questions verbally
-write the questions on the board while the movie is playing
and if you are really, uh, diligent, you could create a work sheet with questions, multiple questions and comprehension.
Edit: I would recommend this movie for Middle & High school, not elementary

This PPT really helped as both good motivation and an Intro to a movie based lesson. It covers genres and character types.

I definitely think the students enjoy roleplaying scenes from movies. +1 on the Pixar shorts, they really really were enjoyed by the students.
