HALLOWEEN OLYMPICS, 21 multi-level mini-games!
« on: October 28, 2013, 05:56:07 PM »
I put this together to use for 3rd-5th grade elementary school, but it is easily adaptable to any level.

21 "mini-games" including relays, hangman, and individual student contests (scariest face, longest hair, etc.).

This could easily fill 2 whole periods (or more), or you can pick and choose just a few games.  When I played it with 3rd and 4th grade classes today, we only played 3-6 games in the whole 40 minutes.

It does require prep time for several of the games.  Please read the "To Teacher" section in the main Halloween Olympics PPT for more details, as well as slide notes for each mini-game.

The ZIP file includes the main Halloween Olympics PPT, two Printable PPTs for the "Make a Haunted House Game" and "Spider Fishing Game," as well as a monster face image (cute Frankenstein) for a drawing example for low level students, and two pics you can use as masks (Jack Skellington and Sally) if you want to.

Any questions, please PM me so I will definitely see it!

PS - Please change the school name (or delete it) in the first slide!

PPS - I recommend changing the instructions on game 15 (Witch's Broom Relay).  It's not good for a relay.  Better just to see who can balance the broom the longest.

Here's a handy guide to all the games in the Halloween Olympics PPT (full text included in Word Document):

Halloween Olympics - Game List
(in order by the hyperlink number in the PPT)

1)   Skeleton Dice Game - Team members take turns to throw the dice to determine a body part to draw on the whiteboard. First finished wins.
Materials:  Die/dice, whiteboard, board marker(s)
2)   Eyeball Toss - 3+ students per team try to throw the eyeball into one or more buckets/boxes/ baskets/etc.
Materials:  Foam balls or ping-pong balls with eyeballs drawn, painted or taped on; bucket(s) or whatever you want to use as a goal
3)   Thriller Dance Contest - 1+ student per team comes to the front and tries to dance like a zombie to the Michael Jackson song
Materials: YouTube video (check the link in the PPT)
4)   What long fingernails! - One boy and one girl from each team competes, give points for each winner
Materials:  None (I tried using a ruler to measure, but it didn’t help, so just eyeball it)
5)   Monster Drawing - All students try to draw a monster the teacher describes (or shows a picture of for low levels) ON THEIR HEAD
Materials:  White paper + students’ textbooks AND/OR students’ notebooks, Frankenstein example picture (included in ZIP file) OR other simple monster face
6)   Witch Hat Ring Toss - 3+ students per team try to throw a ring over the witch hat
Materials:  Ring toss game + witch hat, or make your own using heavy black paper
7)   Eyeball Relay - 3+ students per team pass the eyeball using spoons
Materials:  Foam balls or ping-pong balls (from Game #2), spoons
8)   Black Cat and Kittens Race - 3+ students per team; 1 is the cat and the rest are kittens.  Cat puts hands on the floor and arches back.  Kittens crawl under.  Fastest finished wins.  (Probably better one team at a time, unless you have a really big classroom.)
Materials (optional): Cat ears for the “cats,” stopwatch/timer app on your phone
9)   Jack-o-Lantern Race - (sort of misnamed; it’s not a race) 5+ students per team pass a balloon using only their elbows (hands on ears)
Materials:  Orange balloons w/ jack-o-lantern faces drawn or taped on
10)   Spider Web Toss Game - 3 students per team make a big circle (team members should be next to each other).  Throw the ball of yarn to make a web.  Get points when they throw or catch successfully.
Materials:  Ball of yarn + [optional] number cards
11)   Dracula’s Staring Contest - 1 student per team tries to stare down the other student(s).
Materials:  None
12)   Halloween Limbo! - 1+ student per team
Materials:  Limbo stick (broom, mop, umbrella, or string held by 2 teachers) + [optional] spooky music
13)   What a tall skeleton! - 1 boy and 1 girl per team.  Give points for the tallest of each.
Materials (optional):  Jack Skellington and Sally masks (included in ZIP file) for the winners to wear in order to get the points
14)   Halloween Hangman - Play hangman with spooky Halloween-themed words
Materials:  White board and marker
15)   Witch’s Broom Relay - 3+ students per team have a relay race while balancing a broom on their hand [***EDIT: I recommend changing this from a relay race to just see who can balance the broom longest! (1 student per team)]
Materials:  Brooms
16)   Pin the Spider on the Web - 1 or 2 students per team try to pin a magnetic spider to a web drawn on the whiteboard.  Closest to center wins.
Materials:  Spiders printed from “Spider Fishing PPT” (included in ZIP file, see Game #20), magnetic tape (or tape loops)
17)   Make the Haunted House Game - 1 or 2 students per team. One student cuts out the windows and door. 2nd student picks them up by sucking through a straw and places them on the picture.
Materials:  Print out the Haunted House Game PPT (included in ZIP file), straws
18)   Flying Ghost Contest - 1-3 students per team try to keep a tissue paper ghost flying the longest by blowing (no touching!)
Materials:  Tissues (Kleenex) with ghost faces drawn on in black marker
19)   What a scary face! - 1 or 2 students per team make a scary face, teachers choose the winner
Materials: None (optional - you can use the camera on your phone to help compare if they won’t all make a face at the same time)
20)   Spider Fishing - 3+ students per team try to catch a magnetic spider using a fishing pole, get the points on the spider
Materials:  Print and laminate the spiders (and points) from the Spider Fishing PPT.  Make a fishing pole using chopsticks, yarn, a strong magnet, and tape.
21)   What long hair! - 1 boy and 1 girl per team.  Measure girls’ hair down from top of head.  Measure boys’ hair by holding the longest piece straight up.
Materials:  Tape measure (soft) or yarn and a ruler

Wow, is this really from a year ago? And it got no love?

This shit is AMAZING. My kids were going totally nuts. I changed a few games to suit the size of my room and the materials I could get a hold of, but otherwise, this was the friggin' best. Thank you.

 this is AMAZING!!! I'm using so many of these this year! I also love the ppt template!
I'm going to try and incorporate pumpkin carving as well, though I don't know how much I want to trust my kids with knives...
Thanks for posting this!! (I know it was a while ago, but still.)

Kudos, Robotka.  I'll use this the next two weeks in my afterschool classes.
Thank you!
