Ylvis: The Fox Bomb Game
« on: October 30, 2013, 01:58:00 pm »
It was only a matter of time. Here's a template I made for my third graders' final review lesson. It's the first bomb game I've made from scratch.

I may add sound to an updated version but I'm sure most of us are pretty sick of the song and so I decided to limit the noisiness of this potentially ear-splitting lesson.

The ppt has the Ylvis music video with hangeul subtitles embedded in it, as a reward for the students when they have finished the game. You can get to it by clicking the background of the question selection slide.

Enjoy!

IMPORTANT: Some versions have a typo in them. Change the points on "You found the secret of the fox" to a bigger number - 25, 50... Whichever you want. Not tested on older versions of Windows or Office.

The sound files are included in the zip file.  You may need to re-sync the sound files to the slides on your usb or computer, if they aren't working.

Huge thanks to caesar9171 for their technical support. The versions on this post are the most recent, best-working versions.

Ylvis the Fox Bomb Game:
Designed for 4 teams, with 20 questions. You can delete the Teams slide and use your own system if you prefer. Please let me know if there are any bugs or improvements you'd like to see.

Update:
If you want something that will take up more time, I made the game a lot more complicated by using some ideas I got from Cranium. It's also more inclusive, especially for lower level students. I have uploaded a new version with improved instructions. Zipped folders include ppt and pptx

Ylvis Fox Olympics Variation:
There are four kinds of questions

Pictionary
Boggle Relay
Charades
Complete the Sentence

Teams must compete against each other to win each round (Question). You also need to prepare 5-10 Pictionary cards using your class's vocabulary (Nouns), and 5-10 Charades cards, using vocab you've taught (verbs and adjectives). Change the Boggle and Target Language Structure cards as follows:

Boggle Relay - insert long words or vocabulary phrases. Each team gets a section of the board and they race to write as many words using those letters as they can. Erase any non-unique words and count up who has the most and the longest for a point system appropriate to their level. If your students are Cheaty McCheatersons like mine, get them to write their words on paper instead.

Complete the sentence - teams try to come up with the most interesting, creative, and correct sentence using target language they've used. They write it down on paper WITHOUT their team name, and you shuffle and read them out to the class before choosing the best.

Pictionary and Charades - The team whose turn it is to choose a question selects another team to challenge. They draw a card and give non-verbal clues by drawing or acting to their teammates. The first team to guess the word wins. Be careful when choosing pictionary words; things like The Eiffel Tower, Baguette and Dragonflies can be dangerous in boys' classes. ;)

To save time, if there's a tie, I say that both teams win the result. I also have increased the numbers of groups in a class to six so that more kids get a chance to be heard by their teammates. I've played this with and without sound with three first grade middle school classes and they've been jumping out of their seats, desperate to participate. I especially like the sentence and boggle parts; the teams quieten down and everyone pitches in. This lesson makes me happy. ^_^

Thank you! My kids will really enjoy this. But I would love it if you do choose to add sound later!  8)

I could probably have sound done by the end of the day tomorrow. Can you wait that long?  I have to record and section the song.

All of my kids are CRAZY about this song. I can't believe how popular it's becoming.

I'm using it as an opportunity to get my kids excited about learning English by telling them that Ylvis is actually Norwegian and learned English as a second language JUST like them. They got really encouraged by this!

Thanks for the template, it's wonderful.

Thanks for all the good comments, guys! It's very encouraging for me as well. Now that I've figured out how to do it I'm going to make a bunch. I also like to tell the kids that they're Norwegian and learning English. It's such a great motivator. :D Winning.

That would be incredibly obliging of you! I'll take it in whatever time and way you can  ;D

Yeah, I hate this song. I'm pretty sure my students are actually saying "What the F*ks Sake" or something.

My students have made a healthy habit of saying "What the fox say" instead of wtf.

I think this song has done nothing but good for Korea. =D

I like that they switch from swearing to fox. When my kids say f*ck and I am sure of it, I tell them they must work on their listening skills because those are not the lyrics. If I'm not sure of it and they're just trying to get a reaction, I play the dumb foreigner/pure minded card and let it go whizzing over my head, blank face, and swiftly move on to something else.

All the karma to OP and whoever puts sound into this thing. My students are going to stroke out from this.

I've added sound but I'm having some technical difficulties - I don't know how to make the slide's animations reset so that they play each time you end up on a reward slide. My work-around for now is to scroll ever so gently up one click on the slide itself. You need a mouse with a scroll button. Any help would be appreciated!

:D

Here is the basic quiz template with sound for now, but that bug needs to be fixed and I lack the skills.

How about collaborating, popeye 2u? Make it work better and post it! Remember too that we all have different computer systems and what works for one might not work for another. I am very grateful for what Salambander gave us. I suck at ppt too. Especially sound. But even when it works right, I’ve found myself turning it down after the first few questions anyway. It just gets irritating.

Thanks tsarotu. In fact, in the original post and in the updated comment with the sound attached, I requested any assistance/collaboration that might be offered. This is my first bomb game that I've made, and I've done what I can. I am currently asking more experienced people for help but they also have jobs. If you have the skills to make it better, by all means post an improved version. As it is, the game works sufficiently for a class (and was thoroughly enjoyed by mine). I posted it with the bugs because people were desperate for sound. The sound files are included so if they're able to fix it, they can. And then I hope they post their fixes.

So be patient. Maybe it will all be fixed soon. Maybe not.

Here ya go! Let me know if it works.

FYI, there is a blank slide before each points slide that automatically cycles to the point slide. This is one way to reset the animations.

p.s. I am not re-uploading the sound files. Get those form the original post.

Thanks so much! I read about making a dummy slide but I couldn't get it to transition automatically (despite ticking all the ticky boxes I think I was supposed to). Hope it works! I'll give it a try now.

Edit: Tried it and the dummy slide doesn't automatically transition on the second visit. Hmm... Have to scroll to the next (reward) slide. Hmmm...

Here ya go. Should be working properly now. Let me know.

By the way, to fix it, I just had to set the timing for the automatic advance to 0:00, instead of 0:01.
