After School Class "The Amazing Race"
« on: March 28, 2011, 01:35:02 PM »
So I'm thinking about using the show "The Amazing Race" for my after school classes. Thoughts? My idea is to do vocabulary, talk about the contestants, wach the episode, do a worksheet on the episode, then also research the countries they visit. I have my after-school class 3 times/week, going to try and stretch it across those 3 days. Or possibly do it in 2 days, and have a review game the 3rd day, or just do something completely different on the 3rd day.

wicked idea!

what about trying to recreate a roadblock or something in class?  to see how they could do the challenges? not sure how feasible it would be!

Good idea! If I have enough time during the week I'll try and do one/week, if not, maybe one/month. Also, do focus on the countries they go to, once/month going to try and make some snacks that pertain to one of the countries they visited (Mexico= chips & salsa, Canada= Putin, etc.)

Hi, reading your post reminded me of something I did during winter camp.  I've uploaded the clues that I used.  I think for each class I made 4 or five teams and then scrambled the order of the clues for each team.  Attached to each clue was a key word/vocabulary word and a different country's flag.  Their job was to find all the clues, glue the flags in correct order, and use the first letter of each clue to find the name of a city (I used Shanghai).  It can be a little tedious and you have to walk around and hide clues for all the teams.  The good thing is, once you finished preparing all you have to do is say go and you are pretty much done.

Putin - Prime Minister of Russia.......Poutine - Delicious Heart Attack on a Plate made of melted cheese curds and gravy atop French fries.   No beef intended, just

Late posting this but a few months ago I made a lesson based on this idea. Hope it can help someone if they are considering using this as a theme for an after school lesson. The worksheet is for season 1, episode 1, and I constructed the ppt game based on the episode from I believe...season 4, when the show travels to Korea. The kids seemed to enjoy watching the episode and then playing the game. The ppt can be overly complicated though...I'm not the best at designing these things...and it could certainly use some adjustments and fine tuning. Ah well, enjoy.
