Whose Line Is It Anyway? Thoughts?
« on: January 07, 2014, 04:04:17 PM »
Hey guys! If you are unfamiliar with this show, read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whose_Line_Is_It_Anyway%3F

Essentially performers are asked to improvise a funny scene, or make comments on a topic. I think a lot of the games used in the show would make for great ESL practice because it would get the children out of their seats, thinking and speaking in English, and having fun. Some games I thought of using include:
Scenes from a hat
News Flash  (reporter guesses what is happening behind him)
Party Quirks
Movie dub

I just haven't had the time to turn the idea into lesson plans. Before I spend a lot of time doing so, I had some concerns. Has anyone done anything like it with success? I teach elementary and worry that it might be too difficult for them to think creatively enough to make it fun. Has anyone modified and used these games already? How did it turn out? Obviously giving them more time to think/plan responses would be needed, but do you have any other suggestions?

Because the clips from the show often make jokes based on pop culture not relevant to Korea and/or are inappropriate, and talk too fast, I haven't yet found a clip that would be good to show the students as an example of how it works. If you have any such clips or materials please share. Thanks for your thoughts everyone!

awesome idea

although i think it will be very difficult to pull off.  maybe an easier game like charades would be good.  a lot of dialogue is involved in some of those games

I always thought the Whose Line games would be a little too advanced for elementary, but another game you could use is the one where they get random lines to insert in a scene - I don't know the name of this game.

You could use it in a normal dialogue situation, and have them add their random lines or use them as random objects to talk about, i.e. "How much is this .....(motorcycle)?"

Or the one where someone has to say the same two lines the whole time. Can't remember the name of that game, either.

Some Whose Line games might be hard for elementary students like the weatherman game and promoting the CD game, but the prop game might be do-able.

I remember finding an ESL game similar to Party Quirks (That's where they have the roles and the host has to guess right?) and I thought that could be possible with my middle schoolers, although I never tried it. I guess if you gave them a framework to work from such as a few set questions: (example Dracula)
Where are you from? Transylvania
What do you eat? I eat/drink blood
What's your hobby? I like to hang upside down

Then the guests could prepare their answers beforehand and maybe make it a timed competition - How many guests can you guess in 2 minutes? Might actually give it a try this week, adds a little spin to the Who Are You? game.
