What's Wrong Game

What's Wrong Game
Dawson Powell (Jan.18th, 2014)

This is a simple to make and simple to play game to test student's ability to spot and correct spelling and grammar mistakes. A 20-second ticking countdown timer is included. You will need to type the sentence with mistakes, a sentence with the corrections and mistakes identified and the correct sentence to be reviewed. Removing a mistake is worth one point and fixing it worth another point. Example slides can be seen below.

This can work well as a whiteboard game all students play at their desk or a team game where one student from each team writes it on the classroom whiteboard.

I made this last year for a group of pretty high level 6th graders that hated to talk in my after-school classes. After having them do a writing activity I used their mistakes as the incorrect sentences and gave the whole class an interesting way to correct them together. It seemed like a pretty boring idea when I was making it, but after playing through all of the slides I had made they begged me to play even more. Hopefully this can be useful if you have that type of students, or if you just need to have students practice their key phrases for a lesson.

Very clean layout and looks very useful for even lower level classes.  Thanks for sharing.

So do you have the students correct the sentence on their own paper and after 20 seconds you check it and assign points? Or in groups?

However you want. But I would suggest that if you do use groups, you make the students take turns writing. Otherwise lower level students will just have the highest level student write everything down.

I took the original PowerPoint and added 60 new slides (see attached). May try this on my HS students. For those of you who download and try my file, please do post your own experiences with it. Would love to know if and how successful it is.

Best,

-T

Thanks for this Dawson.

How do the points work?

I see numbers 1-6 at the bottom.

Maybe i've missed something.

Thanks in advance.

This is really nice! I will use this one today. I don't know how well my students can do, but realistically, if they spot any mistakes, that is good enough in my book as most are pretty bad at English and some don't even know the alphabet (at the high school I teach at).
