Hey guys,

Here's what I have planned for next week.

Warmer: Quick game of eye spy.
Introduce dialogue: "Do you know how to...?" with answers.
Practice with examples.
Create own questions and ask classmates.
Activity: Similar to human bingo. (requires printing pages back to back, or you can edit the game and just write the names over the question boxes.)

The following week will focus on ordinal numbers and I'm going to tie both lesson together.

 I started by getting the students to explain to me, step by step, how to make ramyeon.  Some of them have really good recipes!  Then, I used the short Fun Science PPT, which is really just a video of kids making ice cream and then a slide where the students have to name the steps.  I have promised my kids that if they're well-behaved, we will make ice cream after mid-terms. 

I then did all the exercises on pgs 30 & 31, or as many as we got through, typically we finished pg 30 and maybe A on 31.

This week, I prepared 6 step-by-step diagrams, for example how to do a simple nail art pattern, how to make pizza, how to draw a penguin, etc.  I have 6 groups in my class, with 5-6 students each.  They had 15 minutes to write down the steps, then each group has to do a presentation where every student gets to say one step.  The students enjoy it, and I discussed with my teachers having my class projects contribute to the semester score, so the kids are doing well with it.

I made a 'How to' bingo game, but we never got to it.  I'll attach it anyway, in case you want to use it.

Ok here's mine.  It's great, trust me. My co-teacher liked it so much that she recorded one of the classes for the school video.  There is no power point.  In fact I hardly needed the computer at all for this lesson except for some basic instructions and some music to work by.

The unit covered three weeks (days) of class and the students loved it.

One important bit of information first: my school is pretty lenient as far as sticking to the book or not.

You will need peanut butter and jelly, bread, and a knife.  Also paper and scratch paper and this packet: http://www.personal.psu.edu/cfw111/uploads/1/5/6/1/1561347/instruction_manual.pdf  You will also need Korean-English dictionaries as this lesson is based largely on discovery methods.

The focus was step-by-step instructions.

Day one: 

Check their understanding of ordinal numbers.  (all of my students could count up to "twentieth").

Stand in front of the class and make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich silently.  Then do it again, but have the students instruct you this time.  You are to pretend as if you've never made one before.

This part gets hilarious because when they say something like "put the butter on the bread" you put the whole jar on a piece of bread.  You do exactly as they say and only what they say.  Then they scream "ooooohhhh  no teacher!  Open the jar!  Hold the knife..."   The whole thing gets messy and the kids love it.  It should kill about 7-10 minutes.

Then you tell them that they just gave you 'step-by-step' instructions.  You don't even need to explain what they are, they get it by now.

Then I hand out the packets I printed from the link above and instruct them, in groups of 4-6, to come up with a simple task for which to write step-by-step instructions of their own.  It should be simple and it should not involve food or anything that will cost them money.

Here's the kicker- on the third day the groups will act out these instructions.  But, group A will read their instructions to group B.  Group B will have to do everything group A says (reads).  Then group B will read their instructions to group C, and so on.

So for day one, after the sandwich making, the groups will pick an action and begin writing the steps on scratch paper.  Some of the more funny actions were: "How to do CPR", "How to put on makeup", "How to sleep in class without getting in trouble."  Encourage them to pick something embarrassing.  One group of mine decided on the topic "How to look like an idiot".  They had another group hitting their heads, spinning around, making funny faces and more.

Day two:

The students spend the day perfecting their instructions packet, making it nice and clean on fresh paper.  They are to basically imitate the packet linked above.  The teachers make their rounds and help the groups with their English.  You're not doing nothing.

Day three:

The groups read their packets to other groups and get some good laughs and a lot of English practice.

You should work out your own details of course, but this worked for all levels of each of my eight classes of nine groups each.

This is not my lesson but works well and is easy for us and the students.

The PPT includes links to 3 different Adventure Time episodes. I only have the worksheet for 1 episode since I don't use this for a full 45 min lesson. The worksheet attached has the students put the events in order. You could easily add questions to the worksheet for the other episodes, if you want.

The "From Bad To Worse" episode was a big hit and all my students were laughing. Hope this helps since not many of us are using this old textbook anymore.
