(대한 교과서 Taehan) Grade 3, Lesson 3 - "What's This"
« on: April 04, 2011, 11:56:46 am »
Roleplay Script for Chapter 3.

I'm not sure how you do your scripts for 3rd graders who cannot be expected to read yet, but this is how I do mine (ie: a comic more than a script) so I hope someone else can get some use. In PDF due to font embedding and printing issues (no MS Word license parked on the printing PC, would you believe!) I let the students draw their own frame 8.

Vocabulary & Word Reading: http://www.esolers.org/ESOL/lowbeginner/classroom/classroomnouns.ppt.This is the link to the PowerPoint

A simple PowerPoint:

I. – The teacher advances the slide and says, “What’s this?”

- Students look at the image and shout out, “That’s a ______________.”

- Click and show the word. The teacher then reads the word slowly several times – perhaps using a finger or pointer to emphasize matching sound with letters.

- Advance to the next slide and repeat.

II. – When all words are covered, the slides will show the word first.

Teacher: “Who can read this word?”

- Pick students and when one gets it correct, click to show the image.

- Advance to the next slide and repeat.

Words: Bookbag, Bookcase, Chair, Table, Notebook, Eraser, Marker

Assessment: http://www.esolers.org/ESOL/lowbeginner/classroom/readinggame.ppt This is the link to the assessment game.

Basic reading comprehension and vocabulary check.

Made for a touchscreen so students can come to the front to select the correct word – or – you can use the mouse.

Paul - This seems like a great idea...since my book is not Bomi, Buzz, etc I don't have the same Role-Play but am wondering exactly what steps you take to instruct/guide the Role Play using this comic idea. Do you have students listen, then repeat, then add some pictures then perform? Just curious - I'd also love to know if you've used it in your class and how well your students/co-teachers responded...Thanks!

Took another person's PPT (thank you!..sorry I can't remember who or I would have credited it) and made some changes. I added a hidden pictures game at the end. Kept it very simple for the 3rd graders and used for INTRO to the lesson.

I've put together a nice little ppt with various items that students would see on a regular basis. I also included an activity slide I got the students to copy in which they ask their partner what's this using the items that are on their desk.

This a very simple game which requires no preparation and can be used as a filler at the end of a lesson. The students seemed to really enjoy it. The teacher thinks of an object, it can be one of the target language for this unit such as a house or pencil, etc. or any object you think the students will know. As an example, I chose a ship. I drew one line to represent the side of the ship and asked 'what's this?' The students had to put up their hands and answer with a sentence, 'it's a --------' I let them guess for a bit and then I drew a funnel and asked again 'what's this?' Again, I let them guess saying full sentences. If nobody guesses correctly I drew a wavy line to represent the sea. Keep drawing until the picture is complete or a student has answered correctly. I gave the student who guessed correctly a piece of candy. Then start again with a new object. If you have students of a reasonable level you could even get one student to do the drawing and ask 'what's this?' but check first what they are drawing to make sure the other students will be able to guess the object.

Made a fun speaking game.

The students get a copy of the PPT attached.

They are also given a picture of ONE of the key vocabularies.

Each student walks around and has to guess 3 times what the object is.  If Student A gets it right the first time they get 10 points, second time 5 points, third time 3 points. On the fourth attempt the Student B just answers "This is a/an ______________." Then Student B writes their name down and also how many points Student A got.  Student A and B switch and guess the opposite way.  This keeps going until each student knows what every other student has.

My class we added extra vocabulary so you're welcome to add and remove items as you see fit.
