High School - Environment/Pollution Theme
« on: April 05, 2011, 11:37:52 AM »
This is actually following the Listening textbook (it's the textbook with the Van Gogh art).  However, it just so happened to go with Earth Day too.  The powerpoint is pretty much the same listen and point format as the book, but the video is more engaging than the book and allows you to ask more in depth questions.

It's definitely informative and it does seem to get my students involved (I, however, arrange the students by groups and award the group with the most amount of questions answered and student participation). 8)

There's actually a better formatted worksheet here.  Any comments or suggestions?

It went really well.  A lot of the students (even low level ones) were able to understand a lot.  I've used this with my level 2 students and they got the gist of it (in my school, the level 1 students speak and understand English a lot more than the level 2 students).

The students were a little lost with the Global Warming and Jane Goodall videos when they got technical, but there's a lot of "simple" English to let them answer the questions.

I used candy as prized and they were immediately all ears.

Thanks so much for sharing! I'm always trying to get my students to think about life in addition to learning the language, and this is a perfect way to do both. Much appreciated!

Environment ,or natural phenomena, lesson. Powerpoint and bomb game
« Reply #6 on: April 11, 2011, 12:25:32 AM »
Hi everyone,

I have uesed this lesson with both middle and high school. Here is how I've done it:

1. Go through powerpoint  - students are to guess which picture goes with which vocabulary - I dont always show them the vocab for this one before going through the first round of pictures.
   - Lightning round is meant for them to go faster and identifiy which word suits the picture
2. Show the students a video clip - I have used different ones but my favorite is "The Animals save the Planet" (serach it in youtube and find them individually or all in one clip. discuss
3. Play bomb game - which they love

Hope someone is able to use this!

Thanks so much for putting this together. It's perfect for what I'll be doing in my class this week. The bomb game did not want to open though. I'll figure something out if there is extra time...

Hi,

I made this worksheet to go with the environmental powerpoint.  I intend to use it today with first and second year students in middle school.

1. My plan is to start class with a hangman game of this sentence: The Titanic sank on April 15, 1912.  Then I will show a clip of the Titanic from www.history.com.

2. Then I would show the powerpoint and have the students practice the vocabulary.  I will ask them for each term to pull on their own memory.  If it is too difficult, I will tell show the term and we'll practice pronunciation.

3. After reviewing the vocabulary once, I will allow the students to do the matching on my worksheet.  After about 10 minutes of that, I'll review the vocabulary during the lightning round and then play the bomb game.  I will divide the students into six groups and award them points.

4. We'll play the bomb game until class ends or I might finish earlier to ask them what they thought of the class and to give me a grade.  I wonder how they think I'm doing?

Fellow Waygookin, please tell me what you think of this lesson idea and of the worksheet.

Aaron

Great contribution, thanks so much!

My students were having trouble following because the words came sort of randomly. I rearranged them in my version of the powerpoint according to themes (storms, earth-based disasters, fire disasters, and human disasters), and they seemed to pay more attention. Also, I put in a snapshot of Google maps showing the size of the BP oil spill relative to the size of Korea - that really caught their attention.
