Does anyone have suggestions for starting out with this new textbook? I'm not that great at lesson planning and could use some advice. It looks like the general topic for this unit is on opinions. I don't teach from the textbook at all. I just supplement the students' regular classes with the language themes. My last textbook was a bit easier, topic-wise. I'm a little desperate for any kind of help.

It looks like the key phrases are: "I think that...", "In my opinion", "Don't you agree?", and "That's a good idea.".

This is what I'll do for the first week of lesson 1 (week 1: pp. 10-13).
Lesson 1 week 2 will follow soon.
PPT is self explanatory, mainly focusing on the main expressions for the lesson.
Hope someone finds this helpful.

EDIT: Title slide says Gr.1, mistake...

For next week, I was going to try a "symbols" puzzle activity based on a code used by a previous poster (http://www.waygook.org/index.php/topic,497.0.html).

When solved, it uses two of our key phrases: "In my opinion, Korea is a great country. Don't you agree?"

Giving Opinions Lesson

This is a lesson for the "Fun with Speaking" section that focuses on the students' giving their opinions.

I picked five commercials. The students watch the commercials, rate them on their worksheet, and then write their opinion about it. At the end, they create a short dialogue with their friend.

The commercials are linked in the description section of the corresponding PPT slide. For my own PPT, I embedded the videos after downloading them using keepvid.com.

One's a Budweiser commercial, just FYI, in case anyone has co-teachers that would care about that.

I am planning on showing my kids Animal Face Off videos from Animal Planet (Lion vs. Tiger, etc) and ask them to say who they think will win the fight.

http://www.animalplanet.com/tv-shows/animal-planet-presents/videos/animal-face-off-top-10.htm

Basically it will go like this:

1) Show the first couple minutes of the videos describing each animals strength and weakness. Then write the strengths and weaknesses. on the board, including things like the weight, length in the metric system.

2)Have the students write their opinion who will win. "I think the tiger will win because ....." then have them share with their partner and write down the answer.

3) Show the end of the video and see the winning animal! Award points if you want to the students who guessed it right.

I will demo how I want them to write their answers using my cot and my opinion about cats and dogs. High level students, maybe let them make their own sentences, low level model it for them.

Here is my chapter 2: mottos/w.o.w. lesson. I did the lesson over two weeks. Week one I presented the key phrases and had them work on the individual worksheet. Week two I had them work together in groups of 4-5 on the cloud. For the last 20 minutes of class they presented.   I have a/b level kids so I have an easier version of the worksheet for my lower level kids.

Thanks for this. My coteachers actually didn't care about the beer commercial, but told me to replace the "Dumb Ways to Die" one.

This is based on 'Let's talk about..." "OK, why don't we..."

I had the students look at some new vocabulary, and the language.

Then, we went over some example from the textbook. After that, I had the students talk about their school lunch. What do they like/dislike about their lunch. I wrote the answers on the board.

Afterwards, I had the students watch the buzzfeed video about school lunches around the world: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Po0O9tRXCyA

Finally, the student make a new school lunch in partners. They present their school lunch to the class using the language: "let's talk about our school lunch." "Ok, why don't we have..."

I used this for low level and high level students. For low level, I provided them more time and dictionaries.

Is anyone still using this book?  ;D

Here are my materials for chapter 1 Part A

After doing some intro / rules stuff, we go straight into the wordsearch vocab worksheet (slightly adapted from Toribird’s above). Then we will go through the listening part on page 10-11, and Get Ready on page 12. My students are low level so I plan to ease them into the expression of opinion part using the more simple part as in Listen In on page 12 – ‘I think this is a _______‘ ; ‘In my opinion, this is a _________.’

To practice, there’s the ‘What is it?’ game. I will divide students into teams, give them mini whiteboards, and show them zoomed in pictures I found elsewhere on waygook. In their groups students will write what they think it is.

As a time killer for the last few minutes, there’s also a flag reveal ‘I think it is   (country)    ‘ activity.

Part B –
Pronunciation game warmup - based on the Say It Right section of page 13. I give students whiteboards, and have one student at a time come to front and read 4 words (pre-printed on flashcards). All the words, and their minimal pairs, are numbered in the PPT, and the other students listen to the words and write down the corresponding numbers.

Review ‘I think it is___’ from previous week

Focus on having students express their opinion on something, using adjectives. ‘I think it is / In my opinion they are_____’

Listening up to Focus In on page 13

End off with Pictionary using the key language

Part C -

Review the opinion part from part B

Using the PPT, work through examples of comparative and superlative

Finish the listening sections

Final review game for this chapter is the legendary memory game, but with each answer requiring ‘I think that + answer.’ Only marginally connected to the target expressions but always goes down well  :police:
