I added some key words into the intro ppt posted above.

3.5-3 is the months of the year.

3.5- 4 is a pass the ball. Ask students when their birthday is, I will focus on the month more than the date.

Geez the Ujin Jun book is getting tons of love and lots of files are available for it. Stole this from that thread and edited it to match our book. :P

I plan to use it in the 2nd period as a quick introductory review of the previous lesson. Practice saying "This is for you." as well as "Thanks, is it a _____?"

HAPPY TEACHING DAY. THIS IS FOR YOU?

IS IT A PPT FILE?

NO, IT ISN'T. IT'S A LESSON PLAN!

Seems like we got the short end of the stick with this book. Ah well, not much we can do about it.

Here are two games for the lesson that should get the students going.  One is a Mario Adventure Island game with multiple stages and the other is a Ghibli game.

Rushing to get this done the night before, I ended up overshooting my mark material-wise and have nearly enough for two classes. And despite getting it done last minute, the class went really well.

The idea WAS to go through the first 14 or so slides with the students going over various gift-giving holidays, then quickly give them a chance to guess what the gift might be using "Is it...?", giving them a new hint each time they guessed wrong until they guessed it correctly.

That was supposed to be the lead up to the game, in which they were going to break into six teams, with each team taking turns to choose one item from the last slide and let the other teams take turns trying to guess what that item is either directly ("Is it a guitar?") or categorically ("Is it red/a school item/wonderful?"). The team whose turn it was would answer "Yes it is," or, "No it isn't," and get one point for each guess the other teams made.  Maybe playing two rounds total, the team with the most points at the end of the game would win.  The choosing team would pick from a bag full of the cut-up images and the guessing teams would have laminated printouts of the items, keeping track of the remaining options with an erasable board pen.

But~~! The kids took so long and had such a good time guessing the answers to the first part that that pretty much took us to the end of the period.  I only had time to play one practice round in which I picked the item from the last slide and they all competed together to guess the item in less than 10 tries.

I'm now going to use my original game next class along with some extra introductory slides and another little motivational video or side activity (Reaching into a dark box and identifying an object?).

The song here is the "look like a monkey" version of the happy birthday song, sung by the "Madagascar" animals.  It's very short, so I first had them try to sing the original version without accompaniment , showed them this video, went over the parody lyrics, and then showed it once more.  I linked the video to slide 2 of my PowerPoint, which you would have to reconfigure to do it the same way.

ABOUT THE GIFTS I CHOSE FOR THE INTRODUCTORY SLIDES: They're unconventional, yes, but I tried to take as many of them as possible from words they would have already been introduced to in this book or other items that are simple enough and fall into similar categories. Anyway, the more unconventional the gift, the more fun they were to guess.

Nearly the same as the first PPt I posted for this chapter, yet this time I changed the first several slides around to make it so that, given the date, they can try to guess the holiday using "Is it [Father's Day]?"

The last slide is to be made into handouts for each team.  Each team gets a turn to choose one of the items from a bag.  The other teams take turns trying to guess what it is, e.g. "Is it ?" or "Is it [a tiger]?".  Each guess counts as a point for the team whose turn it is.  The team with the most points wins.

I played the birthday song and it's Madagascar derivative the first class as a "motivation" video, so this time I played for them a short clip from "Some Like it Hot" of the song "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow."

I also started off the class by putting something in a box, in this case a hand puppet, and having them, without looking, reach into the box and try to guess what it was.
