2014 Grade 3 Cheonjae 1 - 7. Can You Dance?
« on: March 03, 2014, 02:00:16 PM »
This lesson is almost the same as the "I can play soccer" lesson from the old Sisa book. Here is the material I used slightly adapted for this lesson.

Two ppts, a hand out, an evolution game *instructions in the ppt* and a pass the ball game

Happy teaching

Also, here are some songs and videos for this lesson

I'll do the role-play, listen to 'Into the World', do the 'Your Page', and then we'll have time for a game.

I've revised the Chicken Game (sorry, it's been so long since I downloaded it, I don't remember who created it). Third graders love it. It's like pass the ball, but I use one of those rubber chickens. I teach the kids to squeeze it one time, then pass it.

The last slide, The End, has a hyper link to a youtube video of kids doing the Chicken Dance. Kids love it....

A series of slides largely using superhero gif animations to describe what they can do.  Also featuring Jumpy the Dog, a talented animal whose youtube videos I used to introduce commands in a previous unit.

I revised this game myself.  I'm used to teaching sixth graders who might more expect clear winners and losers whereas third graders can just stand and toss something around and not care about the competitive aspect so much, but it made me nervous going into the lesson. Also, I wanted to give the student some incentive to get rid of the chicken rather than keep it for himself (maybe he WANTS to answer the question on the board), and having clear winners is better for me so I can reward stamps at the end of class. So, here's the point system i devised:

The kids already know their teams from their homeroom class (usually divided into 6).  Have the students stand in a circle NOT directly next to a fellow team member.

If a student from a certain team is caught with the chicken when the music stops, all THE OTHER teams get 5 points automatically.  The student that has the chicken has to earn 5 points for his team by guessing the answer to the slide correctly.  If they can't, they don't get any points that round.  I changed the question slides so that there is some mystery as to the actual answer and it IS possible to get the answer wrong.

Also, with about 26 students in each class, I found having two chickens worked better at getting more kids engaged than one, so each round two students got caught with a chicken. Actually, I only had one chicken, so I dissembled it (the kids would have done it for me anyway) so the head was being passed one way and the rest of the body was going the other way.

The rubber chickens themselves can be found at Daiso in the dog chew-toy section for 2000 KRW.

Having the students sit after each round while their classmates answer the question was useful to quiet things down, gather students' attention, reset, and record points.

An Elimination Game, with a twist~

The directions are on slide 3 (it looks blank, but it's not. The rectangles are clickable as well).

Again with this game, I make many references to what Jumpy the Dog can do (I posted the video for that above).  I also reference some of the "superhero abilities" from my own superhero PPt (also posted above).

Here are some simple videos on abilities ("Can you ~?").

One is a song, perhaps too sing-songy for third graders, but by the same makers as the "Broccoli Ice Cream" song, which my students really enjoyed.

The other is "Gogos Adventures with English", which I always worry is too slow for the kids, but they seem to take to it whenever I show it. It's possible to find the individual lesson on you tube, but I found this compilation had a higher quality picture, so that's what I'm using.  The relevant lesson - number 16 - starts at 5:05.  [NOTE: This attachment was too large, so better to insert the link given below into keepvid and download it yourself directly.]

These videos were downloaded off you tube using the website www.keepvid.com .  I recommend it.  It doesn't work for every video, but it's really helpful for those that have the capacity.

If you prefer you tube, here are the links:

This is an Avengers Game.

Just a bomb game, but it's really exciting for the kids if you're animated about the whole thing. After doing 5 classes of it today I think my voice is hoarse haha

I edited this from one of the grade 5 review lessons (I think Cheonjae book, review from lesson 5-7).
