(New YBM) Grade 3: Lesson 1 - Hello, I'm Miso
« on: March 10, 2014, 05:43:14 PM »
Post your lesson resources here for the new YBM book.

I haven't started the book yet, but I figured I'd go ahead and make the index. I'll add my materials when they are made.

We are using 5 days to cover each chapter.  The the first day of every lesson, my co-teacher wants me to play a listening game covering the vocabulary words.  My vocab words for this chapter are: bag, be, hello, hi, bye, goodbye, I, name, what, you.  So, I am just doing a simple "snatch the card" game.  I cut out the words/pictures from the attached word document and each team will get a set.  I made the PPT for the first and second round to get them used to the words.  After that, I will just say the word and they have to grab it without help from the PPT.  The student with the most cards at the end of a round is the winner.

Here is my lesson 2 speaking game.  The directions are in the PPT.  I borrowed this from another Waygook.org user.

Hello,

i made a Kung Fu Panda game for this unit. Many thanks to the original creator of the format. It is my first so if you find any mistakes with hyperlinks i do apologize in advance.  I tested most of the game, points system seems to be working fine, just a warning that when you choose the letters they don't automatically disappear so you have to keep track on what letters are said to avoid having the same questions twice. Also, there are some slides that require students to unscrable sentences or words. Due to lack of space in many of them i omitted this instruction so you'll have to guide them. Anyway, i hope it works for you.
goodluck;-)

Hey guys!
I made the board game for lesson 1, since they didn't have it in the book. I had the kids flick paper clips instead and it worked out just fine.

A very simple speaking game that works with virtually every lesson:

Speaking Relay

Split students into 2 or 3 teams.  Order them from 1 upwards.  When the game starts, the first student says ‘What’s your name?’ to the next student, who answers.  They then ask the next student and so on until the whole team has answered.  The first team to do this and put their hands in the air wins.  In each round you can make the language slightly more complicated by adding new phrases, e.g. Nice to meet you/ How are you?  It may also help to write the conversation on the board or have it on a ppt once it gets more complicated.

I like to give them 'batons' (i.e. markers) to pass as they speak, and change up the order each time to keep them on their toes.  I also send the baton back to the beginning if they don't speak their phrases fully or try to cheat in any other way.

For the story time activity, rather than just make the kids do role play, I am planning on incorporating the story into a game. I am calling it the cookie man game. Basically it's a find another person with your character game, but with a twist that includes dialogue from the story and the cookie man character from the story. I attached a doc with characters on it including cookie man, so feel free to use it or make up your own characters. I haven't finished the ppt yet to explain the rules so I will just paste it here:

-Students must go around and interact with each other to find matching partner.
-S1 will say “hello my name is ______(answer with character card name). What’s your name?”
-S2 will reply with “my name is ____(character card name).
-If characters match, S1 and S2 sit down together.  If S1 and S2 don’t match, they must go find someone else to ask same question.
-If cookie man interrupts S2 and says “cookie man. Goodbye” before S2, than S2 becomes cookie man and must trade name card with cookie man name card.
-Objective of game is to avoid becoming cookie man.

EDIT: I  attachd a ppt with rules now. I am not very good at ppt or else I would have added sound and what not, so feel free to make better and upload it again!

I used this matching card game to get my students to practice asking "What's your name?" and "I'm ______." It worked well, but be aware that students will just show each other their cards and not do the dialogue unless you force them. I told my students their cards were top secret and they couldn't show them. I also made them complete the dialogue for me after they found their partner.

For learning B and N, I did a slap game and it went really well. Draw a line in the center of a piece of paper and write a B on the top part, N on the bottom. Put one sheet of paper between two students. Have them put their hands on their heads as you say a B or N word. The first student to slap the correct letter gets the point. This game might be boring for higher level kids, but my third graders are low-level, and this was perfect for them. Plus, no prep  8).

So last year my students got a kick out of these phonics songs.

http://youtu.be/kdfUMGlyg-c

http://youtu.be/l-EJm0jZ0bI

I particularly like the N song. It's got a great message in the video. Fingers crossed they go down well again.

I also posted a copy of the class theater script which you can cut into 3, and give the students. I make them do a listening gap fill before we start.

I have vocab PowerPoints that I use at the start of each lesson.  Will continue to add attachments and update this post with all my materials for this particular lesson.  Each of my PowerPoints includes notes at the bottom of each slide detailing how the slide will animate while played.  I like mine to play somewhat "automatically" without having to click a million times or use tons of slides, so please play through it at least once before using to see how it flows.

Contents of attachments:
G3L1.1 - PowerPoint that introduces words "hello, hi, I, and am".  Also includes an animated slide showing how I + am = I'm
G3L1.2 - PowerPoint that introduces words "goodbye, bye, name, your, my, and is".  Also includes animated slides showing how He + is = He's, She + is = She's, and name + is = name's
G3L1.2wksht - I did this at the end of class two with my kids to review the way I introduced the contractions at the beginning of class.  Goes with G3L1.2 PowerPoint.
