Here is my lesson, the ppt introduces the vocab (although i'm not entirely happy with it), then I ask them to write a dialogue with their partner before playing a game. The game was a little tricky to explain but once they got the hang of it they seemed to enjoy it. Basically the students get into teams of 4, they shuffle the cards and deal them out equally. The aim of the game is to make pairs, whoever has the most pairs wins. the first player asks the question on their card to any other player. If they have the corresponding card then the player who asked gets the pair. if not, they have to give the permission card to the player they asked. the game continues until there are no cards left.

i just tried teaching mother may i....BOMBED

OH DEAR...kid's didn't want to participate because they felt shy...weowow...my co-teacher looked at me like a weirdo...and all I had in my head was visions in my head of me playing this game in primary/elementary school and how fun it was...OH WELL a lesson learned

....next attempt...try the go-fish game someone posted fingers crossed :D

My powerpoint covers some of the vocab words, activities involving who/which/that and may I/can I/let me, both from the purple activities book. I need a game to play at the end though and am drawing COMPLETE blanks. OH and if you download this I would suggest animating the circled answers on slides 6 and 7 so that the correct answer is shown immediately.

Does anyone else feel like teaching may I vs. can I is a load of rubbish? Only douchebags say or correct people that use "can I" when "may I?" is deemed correct. If a student asks if they can go to the bathroom are you really going to make them say "May I go to the bathroom?"

As long as the meaning comes across thanks to context, "Can I?" is sufficient and appropriate.

May we skip this nonsensical lesson? Yes we may. Nobody really talks like this.

I explained each term using the ppt. Afterwards I gave each student a card - some were questions, others were answers and they had to walk around class and find their partner and sit next to him. I then handed each student a worksheet and randomly selected a student using http://www.barryfunenglish.com/enter/toolsRandomStudent.swf he had to come to the front and pick a piece of paper that had part of a request written on it, he had to complete the request using one of the phrases taught during the lesson and ask the question to the class who in turn gave a reply to the request. We got some really funny replies =)

Lesson 3 part 2.

We ran out of time but did the short PPT, the listen and talk 2, and did the worksheet. I let the students pick which item they had to describe how to make via drawing an item out of a cup. Hope it goes well for you, worked great for me!

nice-uhhh Leeann I'm going to try this tommorow, and throw away my crusty powerpoint I made...I hope I have enough time to teach them this stuff because my co-teacher has hijacked half of the lesson to finish her paperwork with the kids

I'm going to do a follow up activity of making a 5 min cake - you can find it on this website guys. All you need is a microwave and the ingredients...make the kids bring their own cups and spoon

My second class with the kids are usually review. Here's what I planned.

First, I had them do a word search with different words from the chapter.

The second worksheet had them completing the sentence with either MAY or CAN. Then they had to circle if certain things were from THEN or NOW.

Lastly, I had them play a little game with whiteboards. They had to put instructions to different things in order. For example, how to make strawberry milk, french fries, banana ice cream (all from the textbook) and kimchi.

I began the lesson by writing the following words on the board :

Ingredients
Utensils
Recipe
Preparation Time

I asked the students to define each word. Thereafter we watched a video of Mr Bean making a sandwich, after the video we spoke about the ingredients and utensils that he used and we answered comprehension questions based on the video.

After checking answers and offering feedback I gave each group a recipe, all the steps were mixed up so the students had to place them in the correct order and then report to the entire class.

Choi Jin H Books Grade 2
Unit 3 - Fun with the family
Listen and Talk 2 - It's Simple!

This is an activity that I did with my second graders to assist with learning language related to giving and following directions. Emphasis was placed on: Do you know how to ... ? First, next, then, finally.

The first part of the power point involves how to fix a flat tire on a bicycle. I used this as intro and then went to the book. The second part of the PPT shows how to make noodles in a cup starring my friend Lee from South Africa (he actually put this portion together). I took the text from the Noodles portion and printed the steps out and cut them into strips. Students in groups had to put the strips of text in order either before or after seeing the PPT depending upon their level. They really enjoyed this part of the activity.

Also, Apple_Aki, Thanks for that Mr. Bean. I forgot about that lesson plan and actually have it (something similar at least) somewhere on my USB. It's perfect for this chapter, especially my low levels that can't read.

I am actually using the Thomas Orr Textbooks and I snuck over to this page because I was at an absolute loss as to what to use as an activity for 'Do you know how to...' Thank you so much!! I will use this in my lesson!!
