(YBM Si-Sa) Grade 4, Lesson 3 - "Clean Your Room"
« on: April 07, 2011, 10:41:20 am »
Hi, starting this because it has not been created or is lost. Any way, I'm looking for games and ideas to use during class. I'll post some I've made with in the next day or two. I've also posted this for the Grade 3 Lesson 3. For some reason the games for Si-Sa books are opsoyo.

Hi there!  This is the 4th Grade Lesson 3 template for the new YBM book.  I tried placing it in a new thread but there was no link available to lesson 3.  Hope this is helpful to everyone.  It includes target vocab, expressions, look and speak, and exercises in the handout.  Great to give out for the first day of the lesson.

Here's a ppt i made with intro vocab and a silly "game" where the students yell out directions to "Bob" the stick figure to try to get him home.  I'm finishing his story for next week....This doesn't take long to get through so we did this song as well: http://www.youtube.com/user/freelancepuppeteers#p/a/u/0/0qkj4_U9vsg

I used the "don't do that"  powerpoint presentation for the first unit of the lesson and then had students draw and label the signs they saw in the powerpoint on the "don't" worksheet.

Here is a simple game for lesson 3-1 or 3-2 that our kids seemed to like. First we put the students into groups of 4. Each member of the group was assigned a number 1-4. They were then given some time to cut out the cards on page 145.
To play the game: We called students to the front of the class based on their number, “number 1 stand up and come here.”
They then had to listen carefully as I whispered loudly a sentence based on the cards e.g.  “Don’t run!” (Try to say the sentence only once so they will listen very carefully.)

They would then go back to the group and tell the members what they had heard. The game was repeated until all 8 cards were put in order. Each student in a group had 2 chances to come to the front.
After checking the answers, groups with the correct order of all 8 cards received a point.

At the end of the introduction unit of the lesson, I played Simon says game with the students. I explained and practiced all the actions I was going to use during the game. Then I'd say Simon says either to do something or not to do something. If Simon says to do something the students must do the correct action but if Simon says don't do something the students do nothing. If a students makes a mistake or does the wrong action they are out of the game. The last student remaining in the game is the winner. The students enjoy doing the actions and enjoy the game as a competition.

This is a .ppt I created for the Grade 4 Lesson 3 - Clean Your Room (YBM Si-sa book).

Basically just an introduction to vocab you will use in this lesson.

There is also a short quiz at the end. Very basic stuff. Feel free to use, add or modify this .ppt at will.

Side note: I wanted to post it in a seperate thread, specific to Lesson 3, but I couldn't figure out how to do that. Could anyone help me out with that? Thanks!

My coteacher & I found out it works good to have the kids make a conga line & march around the room following the teacher saying the phonics section - like "M M make... N N nancy..." -- it just helps the kids have fun so learning doesn't seem like a chore.

Oh, my coteacher & I also set up a relay-race where you split the class into 2 lines & the 2 teachers in the front of the class each have a stack of key phrase cards.  Each student runs up & reads the card & runs to the back of the line.  (If he/she can't read it, you tell them & have them repeat it, then run to the back of the line.  This way they practice it, but the line slows down because they didnt' know it.)  At first I tried w/ power point instead of cards, but there's only 1 monitor, so it kept everything too lock-stepped, so 1 team couldn't win.

Going to show this video (You've been framed is good too, here's another option without all the narrative.) The viideo is older (as in the 90s) but the pain is the same!  Going to have the kids shout "Be Careful" and/or "Watch out" between videos. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1796OXXdVzs

Attached also is a WKST that I'm going to copy, laminate and cut out the words. When i show a picture to them, they have a minute to assemble the right sentence to match the picture. Ie Picture of an open door; students will choose CLOSE, THE, and DOOR and make it on their desks.  There are 6 sentences of 16 words. I wouldve added another sentence, but taking it slow with them.  First groups to finish by choosing the correct words, right order, get points.

Hope it's useful~
