I thought this would be useful too. Here are two pdf files of the worksheets provide by the book. The first attachment contains the blank worksheets, and the second attachment contains the worksheets with the answers.  Enjoy!

Here's my initial piece for this.  It's extremely rudimentary.  Didn't have a lot of time.  But I looked at the sheets from the cds and grabbed the first few pages (the student book is of little help).

Wish there was more.

I have two solid activities for this lesson; first is a "pass the present" game.  The nice ladies in the supply dept made up a wrapped box for me (I think it's one of those giant dice).  Anyway, looks just like the picture.  In this game, they build on the previous items.  "It's a bike." "It's a bike and a pen." etc.  The sound should be embedded but I'll attach here anyway.

The second is designed for the Show Time, but can really go anywhere after Period 1.  It's a Peter Pan based ppt that can be conversation practice or a game (instructions on last slide).

Hey all,

As resources are a little thin on the ground for this lesson, I've adapted the ever popular Pokemon Bomb Game for Lesson 4.

This game can work for Part 1 or as a review of Lessons 1 -- 4.

Hope it helps!

Intro PowerPoint (This is for you):
*Very basic gif. ppt using the key sentences > Happy Birthday. This is for you. Thank you. It's a ______. You're welcome.

Lesson 4 Intro:

* Another simple ppt. using key sentences> Happy Birthday. Thank you. This is for you. Is it a ______? Yes, it is. No, it isn't. It is a ________.

I played 'Heads up 7 up' for the first period, and the kids seemed to enjoy it a fair bit.

Choose 7 Ss to come up to the front - give them each a present (I just used laminated cards of some of the vocab they've learnt already)

The rest of the class goes to sleep, and the 7 Ss dish out their presents. Other Ss wake up.. if they have a gift, they must try guess whose it is using the dialogue:

A: Happy birthday, (name). This is for you.
B: O -Thanks.
    X - No thanks.

If they guess correctly, the Ss swap places.

Wasn't ground breaking, but did the job. Probably works best for smaller classes where more students are actively involved..
Crescent fresh.

Here is the game idea from the Teacher's Guide~ Pass the Present.

I asked the students to make one big circle and sit down on the floor...it got a bit chaotic though playing this game, but I think they had fun.  The textbook suggests doing 6 circles at one time.  But, I don't think that's feasible for low level classes like mine.

So this is just a simple ppt with the dialogue for them in case they need it and also the happy birthday song embedded in the ppt for convenience sake, and those without youtube access.

Prep work:
-Ask the homeroom teacher to prepare the cards on p29 in advance.  Saves about 5 mins of class time.
-Prepare a gift box and a birthday hat.

Here are the worksheets I made to give students for the Look and Say activity on p. 42.
and also for the Show Time period when we do the role play.

In addition, here are the role play characters, in case you need them.

standard worksheet for unit.  listening exercises for period 1 and 2 plus vocab/sentence writing practice for unit.  My kids are higher level so reading/writing is expected in the classroom even for 3rd grade.

Grade 3
Lesson 4
1st Period
-------------

Introduction: 'happy birthday' song video + repeat words

Book: page 40 - Look & Listen, Listen & Do

4 Corners game: I played about 3 rounds or so. Easy to play, instructions on the ppt. When their corner is picked, the students are out + have to sit down. Before they sit down - they recite the words "Happy Birthday! What's this? It's a ____." When I ran out of slides I drew a square on the board with each corner (Robot, Cat, Doll, Book) + I threw a magnet at it. If the magnet hit a square - they were out.

Lots of stuff to post. It's been busy, and I finally caught some spare minutes at the desk.

Part 1: All I really have to say for this one is the game in the book is really fun and good. The kids will like it! Find a picture of a present, and a picture of a party hat off the internet, print them out, and laminate them (to use over and over). Give the present picture to the seeker, and the party hat to the secret birthday kid. The CD Rom has the directions in English (Press the play button when you go to Play Together 1) . And to explain to the kids, have them read the directions for "Play together 1" in Korean. One modification I suggest is to have the kids skip the chanting part. This will get very loud. I had the kids clap when they got close to the secret birthday kid, and this went really well.

Part 2: I modified an earlier vocabulary ppt so the words disappear little-by-little and the kids have to fill in more with each round. Also, I made a hot seat game. When they are playing the game, have the key expressions written on the board: "Happy birthday. This is for you." "Oh, it's a...." "Thank you" and "You're welcome." When the kid comes up to be in the "Hot seat" (guess the picture behind them while the other kids act it out, like charades in reverse) the kids in their seat will all say "Happy birthday. This is for you." The kid in the Hot Seat will have to use the sentences, "Oh, it's a.... Thank you." when they have their guess for what the picture hidden behind them is. The kids still in their seats will say "You're welcome."

Part 3: A "Guess the First letter Game." The kids will need whiteboards, markers, and erasers for this one. I have also included directions for a T-Z relay game in case there is time left over. You'll have to modify this as it includes my name.

Cheers!

Here is a Show Time PPT. I do listen and repeat for Practice 1 and then Practice 2 and 3 I let the class do as a whole. In groups they practice the dialogue and then each group present their skit in turns. Hope this helps

Gonna have the kids cut out the pictures and use them as "gifts". They write "From: ........" and their name on the back. Then there is the dialogue sheet. They need to collect birthdays and gifts. In the end they should have everyone's name and birthday written down and all the gifts from other students. I don't think "here you go" is part of the book's dialogue but it seems more natural to me. Change however you see fit. :)

Go Fish (Card Game)

Using the cards from the back of their books they can play this game that is based on Go Fish. Students must collect pairs of matching cards. Students practice the dialog by pointing to someone they think has the card they need and saying "Oh, it's a ..." If they are right the person gives them the card and if they are wrong the person gives them a random card from the middle. As they give the card they must say "This is for you." And the student receiving the card of course says "Thank you." Continue until there are not cards left. The student with the most pairs wins.

My co-teacher was out sick and couldn't tell me which lesson we would be on, so I made power points for both the first and second part of the lesson using this same game. I will only end up using one of them, but I figured you all might like to have them both. If you use both, just change the game on one of them. ^^

Sleeping Elephants Game: (Lesson 4 Writing)

They will play in teams of 4-5. All the students will "go to sleep" (cover their eyes). S1 on each team will "wake up" (Look at the TV). There will be a single word they need to remember. S1 will go to sleep. S2 wakes up and remembers the next word. When all 4 groups of students have seen their word, everyone wakes up and talks with their team to make the key expression.

Perfect scores are 5 points. Mistakes result in a lower score.
