Mad props to JC49, a Waygook moderator.  I found their work on the YBM Si-Sa Grade three book of old under "How Many Pencils" and then just changed it for our purposes, with dog, cat, pic, and cow.

Students will have to be instructed to write IN ANY ORDER the numbers 1-12 in the squares of their card (you'll have to print off slide # 6).

They then ask, Do you have any (pigs, cows, dogs, or cats) to which I will answer yes, I do. (or no I don't).

They then have to ask how many and I give a number, 1-12.
If they get bingos in the shapes shown (T, X, U, and L), they win.
Super simple, and I think my kids will love it.

And I grabbed a couple things off you tube...one that JC49 had posted wouldn't download, but I got others, including one that is perhaps not so PC, but...sorry.

Here's a ppt in which students have to count the number of animals they see on the slide.  Be careful, it's tricky!

When I taught Daycare, I used these 2 youtube videos as intro, review and then warmup throughout the year. I plan to use them in this lesson as well, since my daycares kids are part of these classes, the others should catch on as these sing along.

The On the Farm song is best for this lesson.


The Big number song is just for fun, but ALL my grades love it and ask for me to play Daycare through to Grade 6.

Connect 4 to play as a class or print last slide to play in pairs.

someone posted this connect 4 template in lesson 4 but I didn't get a chance to use it so I've changed pics for this lesson. I think it's a great speaking activity.

Made a hot seat game (charades in reverse--one kid comes up front with a picture displayed behind him/her and the other kids act it out) that practices animals and numbers. Before the game is a review of the animals. I should have included "bird" but there isn't time and my kids know it anyway.

Here's a great song I taught my 3rd graders in this lesson. It's super simple and hits all the target language. They really like to sing it, too!

This is for Lesson 5 Period 3 Act & Play section
Instead of just writing numbers and asking each other for their answers, this is adapted from an Act & Play activity in the teacher's guide.

Have the students just fill out their answers on the table first. Then give them the blank farm sheet to draw the same number of animals they wrote down (if they wrote 5 cows, they draw 5 cows  :wink:)

Then have students get into group of 4 and share their farms with each other to complete the table in the book.
 "On my farm, I have 2 pigs, 5 cows, 1 dog, 4 cats and 3 birds"

The PPT with simple instructions of the table in the book.
A word document with 1 farm (better if using crayons/markers to draw & color)
and a word document with 2 farm sheets (better if only quickly drawing with pencil)

Here's a "Snakes and Ladders" game I edited to practice the dialogue. Print out slide 10 of the PPT. Divide students into groups of 3 or 4. One student rolls the dice, and moves his piece (their erasers in my case). The others ask "How many xxx?" (whatever the picture is). Student 1 answers using the number and picture in that square (ex: four dogs, three cows, etc.)

Land on a snake, you move down. Land on a ladder, you move up. (I'm sure you all know that already.)

Here's a power point I made for 1st period. I only translated a couple of the words/phrases into Korean (the ones I thought would need a translation). The translations were checked and approved by my co-teacher. :)

Pretty straightforward. I go through some vocabulary/key phrases, introduce numbers 1 through 10, practice the key phrases and then listen to Pentatonix sing numbers 1 through 5 on YouTube.

Here's a 4-5 person board game I've made for this lesson. You'll need markers and a dice.

Each student chooses an animal and roll the dice (rock, paper scissors to decide who is first). If they roll 2, 4 or 6 they move their marker forward 1 space. The rest of the group asks 'How many pigs/cows/dogs etc' and they say '2 pigs/cows/dogs etc'. If they roll 1, 3 or 5 they do nothing. The first student to cross the finish line is the winner.

Made a different game to use instead of the one in the book for period 2. 
Actually the one in the book isn't bad, but I was bored today and also wanted to get the kiddos walking around, moving. 

Instructions are in the ppt. 

They have to find the matching card asking their friends, How many ___? Once they find their partners, sit back down.  We can play two rounds of this game since we can only cover half of the animals in one round due to class size.

I highly recommend coating (laminating) the cards before use.

I made a telepathy game with a short animal and number review beforehand. Here's how I ran it: I had the kids read the slides that said "How many ----?" Then, they held up their fingers. There can be between 1-5 of the animals on the next slide. If the students guess the wrong amount of animals, they're out. This goes pretty fast. I did a few rounds and it only lasted about ten minutes, but the kids liked it!

There's also directions for a slap game using the cards on page 33, but I didn't actually end up playing it so I can't speak for how well it might or might not go. Cheers!

Here is a speed reading activity.
  • Divide students into pairs. One student starts at one start point and the other starts at the opposite end.
  • They say "Ready, go!" and then begin to read the boxes as fast as they can (four dogs, six cows, etc), heading towards the middle.
  • When the two students meet (read the same square at the same time) they play rock, paper, scissors. The winner stays on that square and the loser returns to the start point.
  • They say "Ready, go!" again and play again.
  • The first student to reach the other's start point is the winner.

Remember to review the animal names first.

I made a moving pictures game. It was difficult for the kids, so they didnt always get it right, but I think they liked it more that way.
