2014 Grade 3 Daekyo 1 - 2. What's This?
« on: March 25, 2014, 06:15:32 PM »
My students are fairly high level for their age, so some of this material may need dumbing down depending on your students' levels.

For the Nightmare Before Christmas game, two things the sound doesn't work, you need the font and for some reason the letter T link doesn't work and takes you right to "switch points" instead of question. None of this affects the playing of the game really, just little annoyances and by all means if you can fix it, please repost it!!!

Vocab and role play sheet
tweaked vocabulary practice ppt.
and another completely tweaked practice ppt
A video for this, that, those and these

ADDED: A worksheet I tweaked for our book. Someone else made, sorry I don't remember who.

Hammer game: Vocabulary game for period 1. Each slide has a grid of pictures. Some of the pictures have a punishment (get hit in the palm/back/your choice with a toy hammer) or a reward (hit your partner, hit the teacher). If you don't have a toy hammer, choose another punishment and reward system.

To play the game, choose a student at random. (I used their numbers.) The student must stand up and choose a picture by saying, "It's a(n) _____." There is either a reward, punishment, or nothing underneath. This is not a team game and there are no points, but the fun is in getting hit with a hammer :) The last slide has vocab that my students know that isn't in the book. You can change these pictures if you know how to make triggers.

Update to englishscholar's spongebob review game (Thanks)!

Changed the formatting some and changed the vocabulary to match the words in the lesson and englishscholar's vocabulary PPT.

Vocabulary Review: book, doll, cup, jump rope, ball, robot, dog, bus, apple, What's [this]?, What's [that]?

Uses some interesting images to make review less boring.

My kids love these RPS games. Good vocabulary review.

If you don't know how to play,
  1. Two person game. One starts at A, the other B
  2. Take turns saying the vocabulary..It's a ____
  3. Move along the path closer to the other player, finger or game piece (paper cut out)
  4. When they meet, RPS, winner stays put, the loser back to start.

I don't know why, but they love these games.
Switch up partners after two wins.

Story Time: Snow White

This is how I teach the Story Time to my students. I use the book first then use the PPT and Script.

1. Practice listening and repeating the Snow White PPT.
2. Hand out story script.
3. Let each student practice with their group for 10 minutes.
4. Each group performs the role play.

Here's a flying words game. The students work in groups of 4 using one set of the six cards from the back of the book. Show one slide and four words will fly by one at a time. They must remember the words and order... then quickly put their cards in that same order. I did it where each student held one card and they had to stand in the correct order. They liked it!

Here is a review card game. Students cut up the cards, then walk around the room asking "what's this?". If the student can guess which card the student is holding, he must give them a dollar. The richest student is the winner.

Here is an activity for the READ ABC section where students have to guess letter E,F, G, or H. When students see slide I make the sound of the letter and the students guess what letter. Students then say the letter, the sound, and the word.

I forgot to post this last year. Here is an intro ppt for this lesson. I used the original from the book company, and jazzed it up a little bit. The new vocab is still there, and I added more practice slides for the key expressions.  I'll try to remember to keep posting the rest of my materials as I use them.

Period 1

We played a snatching game instead of the "game" in the book. Students play in groups of 4. They tear out two sets of cards from the back of the book and place them face up in the middle. Everyone asks, "What's this?" The teacher answers "It's a ___." Students hit the card they hear and keep the card as one point. If two students hit the card at the same time, do rock-scissors-paper for the point. The student in each group with the most cards/points is the winner.

Period 2

I made a couple of simple PPTs to help show/explain the Talk! Talk! and Talk & Play activities from the book to my students.

Period 3

ABC Play: We did this as a spinner game instead, so that students could earn points for writing each letter. Students play with a partner. Print out slides 8 and 9 on a color printer (there are two so you can print one on a half sheet of paper, and print two spinners at a time). Spin a paper clip on a pencil. Write that letter, and earn the number of points next to that letter. The student with the most points is the winner.

Pass the ball game with what's this and what's that. I used a pass ball the game that someone amazing posted in 4th grade thread with music that changes and isn't extra annoying. And I used some of the pictures and vocab from another user in this thread.  ;D :cheesy: :afro:
