Money around the World

Unit 8 deals with money in different countries.

Here is a powerpoint about money and a Guess What game about money from different countries.

Here's an introductory game for this chapter. If the kids get the answer, they get the corresponding points. I also added a bonus point if a student could point it out on the map. Hope this helps

Here's a pass the bomb game which I modified for this lesson from a game uploaded on the grade 2 thread.  Many thanks to Annekat for the original - my students LOVED this game!

Here is a lesson introducing question tags. It includes a Hearts, Bombs, and Arrows game to help the students practice the question tags and vocabulary from the chapter.  :)

JayBird ~ Thank you SO MUCH for the Pokemon game! That was probably one of the most amazing ppts I've seen in a long time! I was worried it was going to be too involved for my short time-frame with my students, but it was just perfect! Thanks again ^^~

I don't know about you all but my lessons are very loosely based on the chapter.  But in case you are the same way, maybe this can help.
SO in the chapter there was like one thing about someone giving a compliment so I ran with that and did a powerpoint on giving and receiving compliments (based off another ppt I found in an advanced adult class section and simplified).  I also talked a bit about how different cultures think of compliments and different things you may hear as compliments in different cultures.

So, I really love the pokemon game. I got to class though and realized that there are a lot of Korean foods on it. Nothing wrong with it, but I didn't want them for my classes unless I thought they could tell me what it is in English. So I am posting the game again with some different foods: turtle soup, scorpion on a stick, hamburger, cheese, etc.

Do all middle school use this text book? Mine doesn't but I wish they would. Going to try and adapt this lesson without the textbook!

Great introduction to the lesson for unit 8 - Currency.

The students guess where the currency is from and where that country is on a map.

As part of this unit my students made postcards about themselves and I sent them to the middle school in my hometown as a start for an old fashion pen pal exchange.

Wondered if anyone else had tried this and if so, how did it turn out?

I made a matching / memory game the students cut apart and used to practice "Would you like some ___?"
The students turned over a card, student A would say, "Would you like some [ item on the card ]?"
Student B. would reply:
If the two matched - "Sure, I'd love some."
if they did not match - "Sorry, no thanks. I'll have [ item on their card ]."

Then B would be come A.

My students liked this but you need time to cut out.

I love that idea. How did you "make" the postcards?

Listen and Talk Pt. 2: Guessing Game- Foods from around the world

The students were in groups of 4, each group gets a white board, and a handout. If they want to guess the country for points, they have to write "Sure, I'd love some" and the country's name (using the answer bank on the handout) If they're correct they win the points, if they are wrong they get the negative points.

If they don't know the answer or don't want to guess, they only write "No, thanks" and they are safe.

The team with the most points in the end gets candy.

They loved this..lots of fun! It takes awhile to explain the rules, just check for understanding before you start. (co-teacher can help you out) Let me know if you have questions.

Make sure to give them the handout ("cultural foods supplement") too.
