I think this wonderful lesson to use; unfortunately I work at a middle school where a two-thirds of the english level is below average or low. These are great basic english words (except for the word stealth-which my c/t tried to translate to korean but couldnt...) however, these a great words used in my many situations and contexts. But I found that for those students who truly struggle with the basic grammar ("please circle the word yes or no") I throw in The Simpsons season 6 episode 25 "Who killed Mr. Burns?". Idk if they got it or not but the students watched intensively I must add.

I am looking forward to using this next week with afterschool students. They are smart and quick and should be able to get most of it. I'll tweak it a bit for lower students. Thanks!

So as much as I liked the link above, I felt it was not appropriate for my lesson.  This is a prezi that I made.

http://prezi.com/yr5fyqtmukfp/copy-of-detective-stories/

You can edit however you like.  I used a warm-up activity called categories.  It is like Scategories, you all probably know this game by now.  If not it is a good warm up.  I then made a guessing game about my weekend.  I am not completely finished but thought everyone might appreciate this.

Cheers!

I'm teaching Chapter 6 as a 3 part lesson, with parts 2 and 3 using the Simpsons episode "Who Shot Mr. Burns?"

The first day:

Also the G3W1worksheet attached below.

The second day:
http://prezi.com/ibu-scwe6e1b/g3w2/
G3W2worksheet attached below.

The third day:
See my post farther down for the worksheet for this day. I decided that viewing part 2 of Who Shot Mr. Burns + the worksheet + discussion will take the entire 45 minutes so there will be no prezi this time.

You beat me to the video links! I tried posting avi./srt. files of the episode, but this website wouldn't accept the srt. files.  As my files are on my work computer, I'll try to upload them again tomorrow.

Yah I understand why WG doesnt allow video files but it sure would be handy :)

It would be great to have the actual files and not have to rely on streaming video.

go to ixconverter and you can convert the youtube files to mp4 or avi.  That's what i do since our internet connections in the classrooms suck.  After that just embed the file into a picture or whatever you want.

I was actually tossing around the idea of playing "Heads up 7 up" as part of this lesson. Not sure if I am, but its an idea.

The Simpson episode worked great, thanks a bundle! I only did the portion pertaining to the video as we covered the L&T 1 lesson last week.
Rather than printing the worksheet for my lower level kids though, I put the questions into a PPT. Give a try if in a pinch. I also separated the Word Doc so you can double the printing pages per sheet.
Thanks again!

I really want to use the Simpsons episode to do this, but I only have 1 class period to do this in (45 minutes) so showing the whole episode just won't work.  thefrownclown, how did you do this in 1 period?? Is it necessary to watch both episodes?

Hi RedhairAngel,
Well I don't know that it's necessary to watch both but for the sake of conclusion I plan to watch the second part next week. You're right of course, the episodes are too long for one class. I did a brief intro of vocabulary and went right into the episode cued after the opening credits. We then discussed motives and suspects before the bell rang. Not much of a lesson really but for my low level it's the most I can hope for. Next week we'll continue and discuss theories from each group (class divided into groups of 5 or 6) then watch the second part.
Hope you find it useful. Many students have seen the episode but they still enjoy it very much.

Thank you so much for the Simpsons Detective Videos.
My students at summer camp, loved trying to figure out who killed Mr. Burns and were totally blown by the result.
