some materials i'm using for an open class coming up soon.

Pokemon intro ppt - made by myself.

Drawing speaking game - got this from another thread, but made a brief explanation PPT to go along with it. Students draw an object on a piece of paper. Teacher collects the papers. Then redistribute them randomly to the students. Students must try to find out who drew the picture they have by using the phrase "Is this your ____?" and the other student responds "yes it is/no it isn't". Get your co-teacher to collect from one half of the class. You should collect from the other half. Then when you re-distribute the pics, switch. So you give the pictures you collected to the half that your co-teacher collected from, and vice versa.

Go Fish is also great to play for this chapter. Instead of using the usual Go Fish phrase of "Do you have a ____?", play it using the phrase "Is this your ______?". Students respond with "Yes it is" if they have a matching card or "No it isn't" if they don't.

Attached an edited version of a simple explanation PPT someone else posted somewhere else. Thanks to that person!

For Go Fish, the students can use the cards on p. 219.

I played Go Fish for period 2 using the cards from the back of the book (page 219) and it went really well - you can play whoever gets rid of their cards first is the winner, or whoever has the most pairs (and students play until the deck is gone - just tell them to draw another card when their hand is empty). I've found that if students are dropping out of the game early by playing all their cards, then they sit there bored while everyone else is still playing so I prefer to have all of them playing for the whole game. Put them in groups of four and have them mix all their cards up, so there will be 24 cards per deck. I actually have odd numbers of kids in my classes, so what I did was use the cards for the textbook activity in period 1 and then collect them afterwards to make decks of 24 (4 of each card). Then when I went back for period 2 I distributed the decks, so even the groups with only 3 students had a full deck to play with. Whatever works in your class. We had time for each group to play two rounds and they had a lot of fun.

I got this ppt from my co-teacher and edited it for this lesson. I don't know where it's from originally.

The song from English SingSing is great for this chapter.  Not super catchy, but more tolerable than the book song.

Also attached.

"Where is my bag?  I can't find it." / "Is this your bag?" / "Yes it's mine.  Thank you." / "Is this your cap?" / "No it isn't.  My cap is blue."

I made a board game for this lesson. The ppt has a "Make a Sentence" game at the beginning that I used as a warm-up. Instructions for the board game are included in the ppt. Have students play the board game in groups and combine their cards from page 219 for the deck.

Lucky die word lotto game to review chapters 1-5.

see this thread here for an explanation and the raw template of this excellent game:
http://www.waygook.org/index.php?topic=105550.0

the version i used was for "without a digital die", so you need an actual physical die.

Here are the materials I used for this lesson~

It's all a mix of my own PPTs as well as some edited templates.

Period 1 - Listening
  • Hidden Picture Motivation
  • Intro PPT & Worksheet
  • Snatch Game

Period 2 - Speaking
  • Motivation - Pass the Ball (Mario Version)
  • Is This Yours? Song + Lyrics Worksheet
  • Forehead Sentence Game

Period 3 - Reading/Writing
  • Motivation - English Drop
  • Running Dictation Game

**some notes
  • P1- Make sure students don't throw away their picture cards they used for the snatch game in period 1. You will need these cards for period 2.
  • P2 - Once you have a stack of picture cards for the forehead sentence game you can just keep reusing these so students can skip the part where they need to take out the cards from their books.
  • P3 - If your students are pretty high level, they might find and order the sentences relatively quickly. If you want to make it more challenging make sure to check for things like spelling and punctuation.
