Beginner afterschool lesson ideas

I teach an after school class once a week for 45 minutes to 3rd and 4th graders. I have many, many materials!

Here's a lesson on "body parts"

Here's another one on "directions"
For this lesson I introduce the vocab with the powerpoint and then use the other handouts for an activity where the students can make their own city. they must come up with street names and a city name, and use the pictures provided to create their own little town.

...aaand another one that you can use IF you are from Canada. This is also great for winter/summer camp too. There's a powerpoint, "quiz" (the answers directly correspond to the info on the ppt), jeopardy game, a blank map of canada to label, and a coloring activity

This is a "story-time" / story-boarding activity. It is based on the book, "If you Give a Mouse a Cookie."

The whole story is based on the "If..... then...." clause.
eg - "IF you give a mouse a cookie, THEN he will want a glass of milk."
...and so on.

Attached is a document with a picture representing each "If... then" cause from the book. have the students cut out the picture and put them in the proper order. also good for new vocab!!

I bought Jenga last week when i was in Seoul. My kids love to play games so figured i could split them into groups, I'll ask each team a question, answer correct you can pull out a brick and so on. The group at the end with the most bricks when it all falls down wins  :)

I'm looking forward to playing this tomorrow

There are several factual errors in the Updated Canada powerpoint - the arrows are pointing to the wrong places on the provincial slides; two of the provinces are missing (Nova Scotia and New Brunswick) and instead "The Maritimes" is used as a province name. Also, moose don't only live in the mountains. It seems like the author of the powerpoint is from Canada herself so it's even more ridiculous that some of those basic errors are in there.

Here are a website: www.mrsperkins.com  that might be useful for lower level or young beginners.
It uses the Dolch Words method.  Here is a file with activities to use with these words.

I just found a good resource that was put on my lap, if anybody can get a hold of it.  It is, "First Grade Scholastic 100 words Kids Need to Read by the 1st Grade"  It is a big, yellow book.

As I am looking it over it is simple enough for my students while giving some great game ideas that can be changed to suite my needs.

BOOK: Fun Fonix book 1 by MES-english

1) Print out workbook 1 (in PDF format). I printed 2 to a page and cut the pages in half, making a little book for my students.
Pictures can be copied from the pdf.

Lesson 2: short e sound
(I did not make a ppt. for short a sound, feel free to use this ppt to make one for short a)
Watch video on short e sound
Start with ppt: review short a words.
introduce short e words (includes simple sentences)
what's missing ppt game
Open their workbooks...do the workbook together. Then show answers with ppt.
