(YBM Si-Sa) Grade 3, Lesson 2 - "What's This?"
« on: April 07, 2011, 05:50:30 pm »
I kinda added some game in Gulliver's Travel role play
cause I thought that role play itself was kinda boring to their level.

Choose one student to lay down on the floor... s/he is the Gulliver.

and I scattered cup, book, pencil..... any stuffs we learned

Tell Gulliver to scare students who talks about specific object. Such as... "Scare them if they say it's a cup"

Other students in pair come to the front

and say 'What's this?' 'It's a ---"

do this until students are caught.

They should dance in front of the class.

since they are in pairs i gave chance to the good dancer to be the next Gullliver

Students went mad... they were so into this role play game.

and they enjoyed dancing in class.

I took the first ppt from elsewhere on waygook but changed a few slides so it includes all of the vocab for period 2.

The second ppt I made with all the vocab from all 5 periods.  Enjoy!

Here's a listening test for this unit. Dialogue A and B are read aloud. Students write the number of the object that relates to the dialogue in the brackets.

Gullivers Travels power point. It is really cute and goes through the story dialogue. Also there is a disappearing story dialogue.

a simple role play works great for this lesson. A small adjustment: Make it a competition by dividing the class into groups, and tell the students you are trying to find the best theater act. The 3rd graders really get competitive and try hard to speak correctly. You don't need much for a reward just some stickers, stamps or chocolate!

- Worksheet with dialog, vocab, and blanks for having students work on their own stories
- Simple vocab review PPT
- Classrooms Around the World PPT, which I will use as an "I Spy" activity to practice the target language

Also, I'm sure most people have thought of this, but a "mystery box" activity works great for this.  Throw a bunch of classroom objects into a box, walk around and have students reach in with eyes closed, pull something out and guess what it is.  Did that for first period this morning (had to postpone the videos b/c of computer problems) and the kids really loved it and wanted to play 2 or 3 rounds.

An attractive review powerpoint for This/That + Unit Vocab (I studied graphic design in school so I like to think it's attractive).
It's a boy in his bedroom, some objects are close to him (this) and the others are farther away (that). Students have to appropriately
answer "What's _____?" then say "It's a ______."

Here's a PPT with some vocabulary practice.

First, you can just review the vocabulary.

Then, there are 3 games.

1) Vocabulary fly by game.  Pictures fly by.  The students guess what flew by.

2) Matching Game.

3) Snatch/ Slap Game.  You can play this game with the cards in the back of the book. See the PPT for instructions.  Kids love this one!!!
