2014 Grade 3 Daekyo 1 - 6. I'm Happy
« on: May 13, 2014, 03:40:16 PM »
Vocab introduction worksheet with all the scripts for look and listen, listen and repeat and look and say with blanks.

A matching card game.
Fist kid picks up a face down card and says "Are you _____?"
Second kid says "Yes, I'm _____" or "No, I'm ______" depending on what they turn over. Second kids keeps the cards if they match.

I am posting this so early because I am leaving this week and my replacement doesn't come for a few weeks so i want my co-teachers to all have some materials for the next few weeks. I've sorted them for unit 5 and for the first class of unit 6.

Good luck to you all in the future.

Travelingpantsgirl, I was a fellow sufferer with the ottie and comi books for years. I'm glad to see you made the change too!

Here's an introduction PPT, "Alien Emotions" with new vocabulary and key sentences.
It's not scary or creepy at all, it's very kid-friendly.

Enjoy!

I took the 4 corners PPT from someone else (thanks to the original poster!) and adapted it to this lesson. Instructions on how to play the game are in the PPT.

I've also attached a video I found on youtube called, "Are you hungry?"

And one last thing! As I was searching for some different games, I came across this one in an older thread. It worked quite well. The kids enjoyed it.

What you'll need is a soft giant dice and a whiteboard.
You'll then need to write 6 sentences on the board and number them 1~6. I used these:
1. Are you happy?
2. Are you sad?
3. Are you angry?
4. Are you sick?
5. Are you tired?
6. Are you hungry?

My class is quite large so I have 7 teams of 4. I wrote TEAM 1~TEAM 7 on the board and wrote the numbers 1-6 under each team's name.

To play the game 1 student from each team comes up to the board and rolls the dice. Whatever number the dice lands on they have to say the sentence that corresponds with that number. For example if the student rolled a 1 they would say, "Are you happy?" Then I would erase that number from their team. The winner is the team who erases all their numbers first.
If they roll a number that has already been erased make them say the sentence but obviously don't erase the number. They got super excited as it dwindled down to just a couple numbers. ^^

Here's a YT video I'm going to show to my kids.

& Someone uploaded the Alien emotions, but I added the pass the ball game at the end of the original uploaders PPT. I didn't create anything, I just adapted it to my children's level. I hope it's helpful to someone.

I adapted the 'Heads Up, 7 Up' game or 'Heads down, Thumbs Up' game to this lesson.

If you've never played this game before, you basically will choose 6 students to stand up at the front of the classroom. Then you will have the rest of the class but their heads down and their thumbs up. You will give the 6 students each a picture card (happy, sad, angry, hungry, tired, sick). Those 6 students will then choose one person with their head down. They will touch their thumb and give them a card. Once all the cards have been given out, ask everyone to put their heads up. The people with a card will now stand up and try to guess which of the 6 students at the front gave them the card. They will in turn ask, "(name), are you (happy, sad, angry, hungry, tired, sick)?" If it's right, that person will say, "Yes, I am" and change spots. If it's wrong, that person will say, "No, I'm not" and sit back down.

Again, huge thanks to the original PPT poster. This game has been a life saver in a lot of my classes and the kids love it.

Ah! One last thing, promise!

I definitely suggest singing the "If you're happy and you know it" song! But instead change the lyrics to:

"Are you happy, happy, happy? Clap your hands! *clap clap* Are you happy, happy, happy? Clap your hands! *clap clap*"

I used this song as a template and to get the kids going:

Have the kids sing the "Are you happy, happy, happy" part and you sing the command part.

For the other emotions, I did:
sad - cry, "boo-hoo"
angry - stomp your feet
tired - go to sleep
sick - cough, cough
hungry - eat your hand

Happy singing~ ^o^
Happiness is a choice.

I combined my Alien PPT with Castle Crashers Bomb game I found on this website.
Aliens and medieval knights and castles don't really mix, but that's just how I roll...

modified Simpsons tic tac toe game found on Waygook. Also activity for sounds and letters. I usually sound the letter and the students guess the letter. The students then repeat the letter, the sound, and the word.

Thanks so much for this!  It was really great.  I made some cards to use for games using your cute alien pictures.  Here is the pub file in case you want to edit, or pdf for fast use!

3.6.1 I'm Happy Listening

- Minions themed
- Review listening: teacher says a key exp and students put their hand(s) up showing the number on their fingers
- Look+Listen slides: OX questions, then dialogue memory and practise slides
- Listen and Do slide
- Listen + Repeat: slide getting Ss to guess what Andy/Jinsu is feeling for each one

- CARD ON YOUR HEAD GAME I made up:
Ss put all 6 key exp cards in front of them face up. Each round they choose one and put it on their forehead. The teacher asks a random question "are you ---?" (I had the big key exp cards in folders to be random). If you guessed correctly then stand up and say "Yes, I am." and turn the card upside down (1 point). If you guessed incorrectly put the card back face up and get ready for the next round. Winner: S with all/the most cards face down.

- Wrap-Up: I put one of the random folders on my head and a random student guessed "Are you ___?" I showed the card and the rest of the class answered "Yes I am"/"No I'm not" for me.

I made two versions of the same speaking game, which is a matching game. One could be used for period two with the emotions cards in the back of the book, the second for period 3 with the letter cards in the back of the book, specifically V,W,X,Y,Z.

Here's an animated instructions PPT for the Evolution (AKA Cockroach AKA Level-Up) game.  I've changed it from animal motions to TPR based on the feelings: hold your stomach for hungry, hold your head for tired, etc.  Students mingle while miming their feelings, find a matching student, say a dialogue, then play RPS to level up or down.  At the highest level they speak to the teacher.  This game is always a lot of fun, but you have to monitor closely to make sure students are speaking English and not just playing RPS!  My thanks to the original creator of these instructions.

There is also a quick hidden pictures review at the beginning of the presentation.

[Edit: Be sure to change "Teacher Kimberly" to your name.]

For period 3, a read-and-write alphabet dice game with animated instructions.  It's similar to the book game from lesson 2, which my students surprisingly enjoyed.  But it bypasses the huge waste of time that was folding and making the letter dice, and just uses normal dice and a table of values.  Happy face = choose any letter and write it.  Sad face = erase one letter.

You'll need the white and purple Handfish fonts from here:

3.6.2 SPEAKING
- Review slides
- Look and Say O or X questions and dialogue memory slide
- GAME: DICE BINGO. 2 players. Each student puts their 6 cards in front of them. 1 dice under a cup. Rock-paper-scissors. RPS winner chooses a card (eg hungry) and asks "Are you hungry?" Their friend (RPs loser) rolls the dice and looks at the dice under the cup in secret. If they roll 1,2,3 they say "No, I'm not" (no point). If they roll 4,5,6 they say "Yes, I am" = 1 point for the asker: they score this point by turning their card over.

3.6.4 REVIEW
- Slides to support the review page 75 in the book.
- SONG: This week I had my brother visiting and he plays guitar. I printed + laminated the slides 50-52, and used the book cards to put on the board Happy-> thumbs up, Angry -> thumbs down, and Hungry -> thumbs up. We showed them the song with my brother playing and us both singing "Are you happy, happy, happy? Yes, I am..." to the tune of "Are you happy and you know it?" Thank you for the idea from the poster above! The students then practised this and you can split them in 2 groups so one asks "are you...?" and the other says the response. Here's the link to one of the classes singing and dancing altogether with my brother playing the guitar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBl44AXFTfE
- MUSICAL CHAIRS GAME: Organise room to have a circle of chairs. 1 fewer chairs than there are students. My brother played guitar to be the music but there is also a link to Happy - Pharrell Williams on the ppt. When the music stops all sit down. The student left without a chair comes to the middle. All students ask the question on the ppt, eg "Are you sick?" and the student in the middle responds "Yes, I am." or "No, I'm not. I'm happy/..."

3.6.3 - VWXYZ
LETTER-SOUND Showed a korean example to demonstrate letter name and sound: eg ㄱ ㅏ ㅇ 강
As each letter was shown I'd ask "what's this?" so they said the letter's name, then gestured and said "sound" to get "V=vuh, W-wuh etc. When coming across the letter at any point, eg writing. students had to say the letter name and sound while they did the activity.

On the ppt I have pronunciation things per letter, eg the difference between /b/ and /v/ in "beaver" where Korean has these as the same sound in that word. W and Y, the Korean vowel to do and then lower your chin quickly. /z/ is a bee sound.

WRITING Also for the writing, I got students to practise writing the letter with a finger on their hand at the same time as I did it on the board. Also while doing this, I said (and they repeated) the letter name for each stroke, including intonation changes for going up and down. I would point out writing on the dotted line more strongly as some of them filled all the lines.

GAME: Printed out the boards on slide 27 and laminated per pair. Take in turns to roll the dice and move through the board. Say and write the letter you find. The first to get 10 different letters (5 big, 5 small) is the winner.

Here are the materials I used for this lesson~

It's all a mix of my own PPTs as well as some edited templates.

Period 1 - Listening
  • Motivation - If You're Happy Song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4WNrvVjiTw
  • Studio Ghibli Themed Intro PPT + Hidden Picture Motivation - inspired from a post in another forum
  • Circle Race Game - explanation in PPT. I would recommend printing it double-sided so you can play two rounds as the game is a little bit short.

Period 2 - Speaking
  • Motivation - How Are You Today? Song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teMU8dHLqSI
  • Forehead Speaking Game - Explanation in PPT

Enjoy ^^
