For my school I do a point system along with my own English store. Its a pretty simple thing I implemented this year and so far its worked surprisingly well. Students earn a point/sticker for doing certain things. At the end of the month I convert their point into dollars, which for a fun twist I had a friend make dollar bills with the faces of the teachers at the school on them. Every five points they earn a dollar that they can spend at the English school. I also threw in a class of the month and students of the month to create a little competition between my classes. Kids have really enjoyed seeing their points add up on the chart. But while it works to motivate a majority of my students, some still don't really care. I'm happy with how its turned out.

Each student is given a stamp page and if their team does well and/or if I've noticed they participated in class for that day, then the students get a stamp. The students have to get 21 stamps before they are able to trade it in for candy. The next time they're able to get another candy (* larger size) is when they reach 35, then 41 and then 60. Once you reach 60 stamps then you get a big bag of different kinds of snacks. It was already set in place, but I've made some changes for the classroom and we have 3 winning teams per class ( 1st , 2nd, 3rd) and not just one. I did it to encourage the teams and students to keep trying.

I would like to start a competition between the classes. I may introduce the idea next week so we can start in the beginning of the month.

@janet1992, you have a great blog and I love the read- a-thon idea. I'm planning on introducing reading into the classroom( outside of the textbook) and then have the students re-write the story or make a comic book out of what they've read.

Myself and the kiddos love Classdojo.com

It's portable, free and reinforces good behavior.
