Def Poetry Jam PowerPoint
« on: May 19, 2014, 07:00:44 PM »
This lesson is designed to teach poetry, emotion, and epic tortured passion. Rhyming and rhythm are reviewed.

There are two main activities in this powerpoint:

Exercise 1:
(1) Write poems with rhyming words and/or some rhythm
(2) Share the poems with the class

Exercise 2:
(1) Students are given one word as a prompt (e.g. Night, Home, Late)
(2) The students write down words and phrases that they associate with the prompts (e.g. darkness, black, winter, playing in the dark)
(3) These sentences become the basis for interesting poetry
(4) The poetry is then shared in a def poetry jam-like atmosphere, i.e. someone takes center stage.

Won't know how well this will go, to be honest, but it's worth a try!

If you try in your own class, let me know how it goes!

Thanks,

8)

p.s.

I've been having some problems with embedding video into my PowerPoints. If you download this, let me know if you can see the video. Thanks!

Not yet, but I'll definitely have a chance this September. I'm going to try it out at an all-boys technical high school. I'm not expecting stellar results with this group, but if I can snag the interest of maybe a handful, that might be all that I need to advocate for this ppt...

Otherwise, your guess is as good as mine at this point.

Hi Kaylarose!

I'm so glad you like this!! I made this at a time when I was missing my hometown, NYC, a lot and this was what I made to channel my energy a bit!

Believe it or not, I have yet to try this because of various, unanticipated and extenuating circumstances, like exams, vacations (Chuseok), debates, auditoriums, and the like. However, the more time I spend with my students, the more I think they could handle something like this easily and probably even enjoy it.

I think my biggest obstacle in using this particular activity, however (to be honest), is administrative. Most of the Korean teachers--at least the ones that I take orders from-- don't believe there's a need for "poetry," in the classroom, even if the lesson is framed as "understanding cultural differences." Most, if not all, of my co-teachers and supervisors want me to strictly give book-treatment to English conversation class, to treat it as an academic subject that is to be absorbed and then regurgitated. I think this mandate runs pretty deep in the culture here, where I'm teaching, and I'm not sure I want to overstep boundaries and try to break anything that's been long ingrained and taken for granted.

That said, it's possible this game might work in other schools in Korea, and possibly in other countries. I'm pretty sure my Mexican students, for example, would have loved this.

Anyway, just my two cents.

Thanks so much for your kind words. They really made my day! :)

Awesome, looking forward.

And just as an fyi, don't feel like you need to hold-back any quote-unquote negative remarks or challenges that you encountered. I want the honest truth here, so that we can all collectively benefit from knowledge gained.

Thanks so much for liking my ppt enough to try it out! :)
