This lesson always works for me~
« on: June 20, 2014, 01:00:33 PM »
So I work at a girls high school, and whenever i do this activity, it's always a hit. (not sure how boys will react to it.. i use a lot of boy groups haha)

But anyway, my girls love it when i translate lyrics

So I break them up into groups of 4~6, and even if some of their levels are low, there's usually at least one who can translate it decently

Then i show them a part of the song (translated from korean into english) and they have to guess the singer and the song title. (+5 for the right song, +5 for the right singer) i usually give them about 1 minute or so, and if they really don't know, i'll give small hints like, boy or female/  group, or solo, or unit (a few singers from one group), and a maybe a bit of the dance if i know it. and right before the class ends, i let the winning team choose a song to listen to

I speak a little bit of korean, and i know some groups, so i always make sure it's a part of the song where there's not too much english. then it would be too easy. of course i mix in easy ones, but i always have a few hard ones as well

i try to pay attention to what they talk about in class (in terms of groups) and then i use their songs

btw some relative groups right now are: exo, got 7, btob, infinite, beast, apink, girls day, 2ne1, big bang, vixx, orange caramel, mblaq, iu, shinee, girls generation, block b, b1a4... my girls really like them

Here's one example of the activity.

Just thought I'd share! I would love some feedback. Enjoy ^^

Great idea, did you translate the lyrics yourself?

I think I could use this as a game day lesson. I will let you know how it goes with boys classes and mixed classes. ;D

Ah my korean isn't that good haha. I just search on a kpop translation website, and then I just double check it to make sure it's a good translation and change as needed.

Hope it goes well for you too~

Omg, Dana, thank you so much for this ppt! What a simple-yet-fantastic idea!

I will try this on my middle schoolers. It might be a little too hard for them, but it's worth a try. If they're the big fans of Exo and Girls Generation that they say they are, they should be able to recognize some of the words... maybe??

Keeping my fingers crossed.

Your lesson should come with a warning......Screaming ensues! My girls loved this! The screaming and subsequent singing (and some dancing) was a joyous sight indeed. The boys did not fair so well but they enjoyed guessing. Will keep this handy for fillers if a class ends a little early. I hope you will post the next installment. Great lesson, simple and successful! Thank you!

Thanks.  I'll be using this as filler for my music-based camp.

Do you have guessing1.ppt ?

haha! yea i should have mentioned that! girls and their kpop bands
i guess with the boys, it would be better to add some girls groups in there next time around

i'm really glad they enjoyed it~

i do, but for this one, i used a few slides from another person on this website (i'd like to give them credit but i for who)
anyway, the first ten slides are the lyrics again. (some of them are pretty easy, so they'll be able to guess right away)
and the following 8 slides are true and false questions (these are the ones i got from a fellow waygook) - for this a cut up some paper and wrote true on one piece, false on the other. and gave one set to each group.

this lesson always seems to run a little short for me. but i've been able to fill the time with a song, or talking. but if you can't do that then you might want to go slowly or add some more lyrics or true/ false questions of your own~

In case people are wondering, I tried this with a couple of my all-boys classes and it actually went really well. It was great to hear them even trying to read the English text on the screen. I did change it up a little by making it heavier on girl groups, and I added a picture of the group to the answer slide.

Great idea Dana. :D

NEW! IMPROVED! MY GRAN LOVES THIS!
« Reply #10 on: November 13, 2014, 11:06:38 PM »
holla my chingus.

i only have 1 day of classes this week due to speaking tests and the Suneung, so i took some time to pimp out this game a bit. i also changed out some of the songs, but mostly it's a combination of songs from game 1 and 2 posted earlier. there's now two A-pink songs because i think they all have lovely bottoms. +10 internets to you if you get that reference  there's also mainly girl groups now because i teach all-boys, and they like looking at the pretty ladies.

there's 2 versions of this i've done here:

Version 1: this has the music videos embedded, and you can grab it from my Google Drive. Be warned, the file size is very large (600MB+) so it's not something to download quickly 5 minutes before class starts. The RAR file has everything you need in it, including the videos themselves if the embedding isn't working.

I had to use live versions for some of the songs because they just weren't downloading. maybe there's a download block on them or something. and i used the Robotaki remix for G-dragon - A Boy because i think it's way better than the original.

DOWNLOAD LINK

Version 2: this is much smaller, and only has pictures when the answers come up. there aren't any embedded or hyperlinked videos or anything.

To extend this lesson i've also done a worksheet where the students must translate the songs into English. there's 8 because i have 8 groups in my classes. they're the same songs as in the Powerpoint because i'm only doing this lesson with 3 classes tomorrow, couldn't really see the point in racking my brains and finding 8 new songs.

You can grab the worksheet from the attachment here, or if you download the RAR file it's in that too. just get them to write on that page or on the back or on some scrap paper or something.

If there's still time at the end you can get them to sing the English lyrics they've translated and the other teams should try guess the song.

that's it, i'm out, off to the hospital now because my ears are bleeding from listening to too much k-pop prepping this lesson. pray for me.

EDIT I've uploaded the answers to the translation worksheet if some of your co-teachers just flat-out refuse to help students with their work like mine do.

Great stuff!

I made a very slight adaptation to the second activity in Warren-King's lesson. I was going to use it today, but my classes were cancelled so I haven't actually used it in class yet.

My students' English level is too low to translate the lyrics so I came up with this alternative translation activity.

I will give each student a worksheet with the first verse lyrics to four songs written in the wrong order.

The students just have to listen to the first 30 seconds or so of the song then try to put the lyrics in the correct order.

Easy!

I will probably teach them some words before each song so even the really low level students can basically just listen out for the one word and still have a chance at answering.

Also I deleted a couple of slides from the first activity as I had already done this activity with those songs(Mr Mr, Mr Chu), so if you want the want the full lesson you are probably best off downloading both PPT's.

Props to you girl...
I think you just won the internet with this activity. It's absolutely good fun. And I know what my girls are like. They're gonna tear through this activity like a hot knife thru butter.

thanks for sharing.

holla my fellow waygookin warriors.

the lesson i posted above went down well with the 3 classes i tried it on, so i made some substantial edits and plan to use this new version in the week before end-of-semester exams.

there's now only girl groups, because that's what my all-boy students like (surprise surprise). i also changed out 7 of the videos in version 1 of this lesson i posted above. the only 3 remaining are now A-pink - No no no; A-pink - Mr Chu; and Crayon Pop - Bing bing.

all these songs are pretty well-known because my kids suck ass at k-pop. i've cut out the overly-long intros to Gee and Bing Bing, and i've also trimmed all the videos so that they end straight after the first chorus. they've also been set to autoplay, so if they don't start immediately just wait a few seconds for them to kick in.

the translation exercise now has lyrics for all 10 videos (see my previous post above for an explanation of this).

once again, everything you need is in this RAR file which can be grabbed from my Google Drive
