Early starters: Disney songs
« on: June 20, 2014, 04:46:09 PM »
I have noticed that the students who have been coming up from kindergarten into phonics level in Elementary school have been able to sing along to the popular Disney songs like the ones we have been blasted with from Frozen.

I would like to take this one step further. I have a class of 4 girls who are studying the phonics. They have a good idea of how the songs for Frozen go, and I think that song is a really good way for them to practice their English.

This group of students are only 1st/2nd grade elementary so I don't expect them to be able to sing the ballads well or even at all, I just want to expose them to different types of music. I figured Disney would be the best because they usually have a lot of sing-a-long songs that have some good animation videos.

Does anyone have any experience with teaching students like these in this style? If you have taught at kindergarten and can give me any suggestions I would be really grateful.

Thanks

Surprisingly, Disney songs can get really difficult (except for the love ones, lol). For really little kids, I like to use "super simple songs" or "dream English kids" songs from youtube. Most of them have subtitles and they also have motions (so the kids can dance at the same time). This really keeps their interest, imho. I also usually give points to the best team (participation-based) to really motivate them, lol.

For older kids, I recommend using "doodle songs" on youtube. BUT! Definitely listen to them all the way through before using them because, despite the fact that they were drawn by kids (so you would think the songs would be fine), there are some questionable ones like "The Lazy Song" by Bruno Mars x.x

My students also like Connie Talbot's "I have a dream," because it's pretty easy and they all like her because she is around their age in the video ^.^

Good luck!
