Vocabulary Game: Creepy or Cute
« on: July 02, 2014, 03:17:51 pm »
Rather than an end of the semester K-pop Slam, I've decided to use this vocabulary game. Students will see a word and decide if it is a synonym of 'creepy' or 'cute'. Then they'll see a picture to fawn over or be repulsed by. (The philosophy behind this game is that cute things and creepy things are what most get a rise out of my students.)

Some of the images (and gifs) are a bit intense, but nothing is graphic. It was vetted by a co-teacher who jumped a few times (especially during the video), but only said that it was so-so scary. I think it should be fine for middle or high school students, but probably not elementary students.

(When you download these files, be sure to put them all in the same folder.)

Enjoy!

This is a neat game, teaches some interesting new vocab words too.  Probably use this next week after finals! :)

I will try this tomorrow with my high schoolers, but I think the videos are a tiny bit long. The scary one has a story, so a bit long is ok, but the cute one might be a bit boring after the first 90 seconds for them, but we will see.

I recommend telling your students that the creepy video is a little scary. I don't recommend it for elementary school students or even middle school students, unless you are at an all-boys school. The video does contain some nudity, but nothing you wouldn't see on a Korean TV show.

I will report back whether or not they liked it. I can tell that this was a labor of love for you. It looks fun and interesting.

Thanks! This game was a lot of fun to make. I've found the creepy video to be a hit with my middle school girls. It's thrilling and scary, but all in good fun. Especially when you go back and pause the video on the monster. Part of the reason I made this was because many students would tell me they like horror films whenever we talk about movies. And their reactions have been interesting to say the least, some have shielded their eyes and jumped through the whole thing, but others smiled, clapped, and didn't even flinch during the reveal.

But, you are correct about the cute video in that it's a bit long. Just wanted to feature two videos that were about the same length, but it's best to skip past that one after a bit.

Is the nudity you cite the fact that the woman in the video is wearing a long t-shirt as a nightgown? The viewer sees a bit of leg, but it's in no way sexual, and in my opinion much tamer than most K-pop clips featured in the slams.

I do think you're correct in only using this for more mature students. I'm at an all girls middle school, and am only using this with my third grade classes (the 2nd graders get the K-pop game I made last year and withheld from them as 1st graders). I'm not sure how much boys with enjoy the cute aspect of the game, as I made that mostly with my girls in mind.

Also, a tip on how to play the game: I scraped the mere guessing aspect of the game after the first play through. I've found that it is more successful as a sort of dictionary race game. I give my students Korean-English dictionaries -- my school has a lot, enough that they can be shared with partners in the groups -- and give the points to the first group that can find the word and tell me if it is synonymous with 'cute' or 'creepy.' Doing this makes the game very long, and you won't be able to get through all of the slides. However, it is much more successful of an activity, especially if you are able to balance the groups playing the game. (Unfortunately, some words like 'pulchritudinous' and 'heart-melting' are not listed in the dictionaries, so you'll have to play around those.)

REVIEW of Creepy or Cute:
Ok, so I went ahead and used this with four classes yesterday.

The Classes:
Three of the classes were high school classes, and it went ok. My students are a low enough level that guessing is much more fun than the work of searching a dictionary, however, if they were at the national level or a bit higher, I think doing the dictionary thing would be nice.

I did it also with a mix of middle school students. I gave them a choice and told them that it was a bit scary, so they could choose something else. The four girls in the class were literally yelling at me to play the game. They wanted to see what "scary" was. They landed on the scary video and it was the boys who were scared, and the girls were rather upset at me. They said that it wasn't scary and gave me a "we want a refund" attitude. Two boys, twins, were at the point of crying and didn't watch the video or play the game because they seem to have been extremelly sensitive. So, to recap, I was wrong. The girls had a great time, and a few boys jumped at the end of the video, but two boys were almost at the point of crying.

The Game:[/b]

Pros-
I like the whole concept. I like the timer and the automatic sentences that came in. I know how much time it takes to time all that well, and I enjoyed it.

Cons & Suggestions for Improvement-
As I said before, the cute video is a little long. I get that you wanted videos of approximate length, but I think the real difference is that one has a narrative and the other has... pictures and a song that repeats. If the cute video had a story, the length would be fine.

The design of the slides is a bit off, but I don't expect you to fix it, because you did so much for us by giving us the PPT. If I had the time, I would change some things around. The first thing I would change is to make the vocabulary in question much larger. I would also make the very beginning of the video, where the rules are, not have an automatic timer to the next slide. I prefer to click myself. I would also include a slide that explains the points a little better.

I think I would also change the background to be something a bit darker, or at least with some kind of color or graytone. I think the white just looks rather unfinished. Also changing the punctuation into numbers might be easier, since my students don't even know "period."

Final Thoughts:
This is an excellent game for upper middle school or high school students. Make sure you warn your students that it has some "scary" pictures and stuff in it. Give them an option NOT to do it if you think your students might be scared or cannot handle it. All in all, I had fun with it. If you want to make it more educational, teach the worlds a week or two before you do the game, so it is more of a memory game than a guessing game, but make sure that they have enough time to forget some vocabulary, so it is more fun. Also, one class of mine in the high school, the one I was hoping to scare the bajesus out of, didn't choose either video. They had no video, so one team was at 99 points.

I just did this game with a class of 3rd year high school students.  I have one class twice in an afternoon so I thought they would be good guinea pigs.

I handed out sheets of paper and made each pair of students make a big sign for CREEPY or CUTE and decorate for a few minutes to fill time.  Usually I do KSAT vocab drills so they were happy.    We picked the two best sets and split the room in two.  I let each group decide on an answer so both teams could be correct/incorrect or half right/wrong by holding up their sign.  When I did not hear a letter from the class I would just choose one of the punctuation marks.

The videos would not sync into the ppt so I just would drop out of the lesson and pull up whichever video the class chose.  No biggie.  I made sure to always click on the points tab even if both teams were incorrect.  I did not want to miss the videos.

THe next time I use this I will probably pull up a different cute animal video.  One with cute videos not just pictures.  We just watched a minute of the cute video and then went back to the game.

The students did not have a problem with the creepy pictures.  Luckily when we got to the scary video the sky had gotten dark as night due to storms so it was fun to watch the kids scream.  The boy shrieks were louder than the girl ones.

Next time I will also have two areas on the front board with CUTE and CREEPY and list the words as they come up in the game so there is a little more exposure/learning involved.

I liked how clean the layout was.  The fonts were clear and a good size.  so Thank You!
I would also usually add a light design to the background of the slides like Ley_Druid said, but these slides were full so I did not think the white distracted in this case.  I'm so glad you did not have a dark or busy background that can be really hard for students to see.  ALso super happy that the game board would remain even if I accidentally clicked to a wrong slide.

FYI my boys at my high school love cute almost as much as the girls.

I did this game at my all-boys technical high school tonight, and it worked superbly.

It's the end of the semester, the boys are fried (i.e. they don't want to play any games, let alone do "work") and this game just about saved me from what could have been a terribly exhausting and tedious evening, replete with teeth-pulling and angry scowling.

Not only did this game get their attention, it allowed them to sustain just enough focus to get through the 45 minutes with me. Sure, they weren't jumping for joy, but they did work with me through these slides... and at this stage of the game, I'll settle for that.

Many thanks, Aklimkewicz, for all of your hard work!

Hey aklimkewicz,
I used this game a couple of months ago. I loved it so did the kiddos. I want to use the same style to do a worried or scared game. Give phrases then decide if it is worrisome or scary. I have been reverse egineering creppy or cute. It's tough going. I don't have your flair, talent, or even pincahe for it. So please help a brotha out and share a template w me? I'll be your best friend.

Dude, I think I saw your dad in a movie.

'Worrisome' words don't seem that different from 'scary/creepy' in my book. What is your word list? You should have posted this up here earlier, as I've just been writing horror movie reviews most of the afternoon.

Post what you've got and I'll take a look at it come Monday. How's that?

Thanks bud. Yeah my dad is kind of a big deal. I have just attached the phrases I want to use and some pics. I spent over an hour trying to insert pics into your tv screen and get it to play. I wrote you after that. Thanks a lot.

I went back to see how I made this TV transition. Each picture is just an oval shape with the background filled as something different. So, I modified this and added your worrisome pictures, as well as some extras. The timing is still set to the creepy/cute music mashup that I originally made, but you'll probably want new music, and that could change the timing. Might I recommend Worrisome Blues by Marta Mier?

Also, my Korean dictionary says that 난처한 is 'worried,' but Google translates it as 'perplexed.' You'll want to ask your coteacher if there is a better word.

Hey aklimkewicz,
This what I ended up using. It worked but a little too easy I think. Thanks for your help. So I did the ppt and had the students fill out the survey with other students.
