Fun Picture Scavenger Hunt/ Survivor Camp
« on: July 23, 2014, 12:39:58 PM »
This is a two-part lesson because I have a 3 hour camp. The first part is the picture scavenger hunt. To do this, you basically get students to go around school and use their cell phone to take pictures of certain items around the school within a certain time limit (I gave them 20 minutes). Certain things on the list are unique to my school, so adjust as necessary. I recommend you don't tell your students what any items mean. Instead, let them look it up on your computer. Just make sure that safe search is on. I had one student search for "bang" instead of "bangs". You don't want the wrong thing showing up.

The second part is the survivor lesson. I basically used the minute to win it games and adapted it a bit.  This is the real fun part. Students had an absolutely great time. The first part of survivor is the word search (you can just get one online) After the teams finish the word search, they can move to the stations and start the activities. I basically set up 8 "stations" (tables) around the classroom. Students have to complete certain fun tasks at each of them before they can move on. I had 4 teams of 4 students each. It was a bit tough to supervise all the activities, and still keep signing off on all of them. It took them about 30 minutes to finish all the survivor challenges after the initial word search phase was complete. So you can determine the difficulty of the word search you'll use depending on how much class time you want to fill.

If one team is at one station, you can have students move on to another station and come back later. They don't necessarily have to do it in order.

Also, at the end of the survivor challenge, though it says walk, I should have written walk or run because I had two teams finish at almost the same time and the 3rd place points depended on a physical race between the two teams. So be sure to let your students run if they want. It's good exercise as well.

Things you'll need:
Cereal Box
Paper
Tape
A few balloons
A box of cookies
50 paper cups
8 ping pong balls

Brilliant idea.
Thank you.

I have a question. The final Survivor Challenge involves running around the track outside. So do you leave the students in the classroom as soon as the first team is ready to go outside,

or how did you verify that they actually did complete the lap?

Thanks again. This is great!

Instead of having them run around the track, I had them run to the 2nd floor of the building and back. The track is too far away from my classroom, and I wasn't too sure they wouldn't cheat...not that I checked whether they actually went to the 2nd floor...but I figured there'd be less cheating. I just let them go at any point in the activity.
