Picture/Writing Game!
« on: July 25, 2014, 06:25:32 PM »
Hello there!
Not my idea but just my version of it.
I made a quick and fun picture game. Students are shown a HD pic of a cool or exciting scene and in teams they must write down every thing they see and any words that describe the picture. So 'tree' 'sky' 'scary' are all acceptable.
Words must be relevant and make sense. I allow spelling mistakes as some words are tricky to write down.
The team with the most relevant words by the end of the timer (5 mins but you could tell them 3 mins and cut it short) wins!

A good, 20 min vocab game to finish off a class. Might be worth checking the winning teams words in case of any cheating or nonsensical words haha

Hope this helps!

I like this! Very neat pictures. I think you're right when you say this will make a nice finishing-activity.

I'll try it on my middle schoolers after summer vacation.

Thanks for the contribution!

Where did you get these cool pictures? I'm guessing its an anime or game?

On a number of sites really, one of them being 'pichost.me' it seemed to have a lot of random things on. But also a google search of 'hd amazing pictures' will get you some great things. A lot of fantasy things come up if you peruse through.

Thanks a lot for this. I have a week of 90 minute 'special' classes with the more advanced kids at my elementary school, and I need to find a ton of random games that will test their skills and kill time. I'll try this out with the 3rd and 4th graders!

I teach middle school, and I really liked this idea.

I think I'm going to approach this activity like the rules for Boggle though (or how I played Boggle).

A 3-letter word is worth 1 point. A 4-letter word is worth 2 points. Etc etc etc.
If another team writes the same word as you, neither team gets the points for that word.
I created a sci-fi edition to this activity and will give them 3 minutes per image. After explaining the rules, awarding the points for each round, and announcing a winning team... I think a ten-picture game will be an easy 45 minutes for a class.

I'm just not sure how to handle spelling. Any suggestions before I let this loose on my after school class later today?

This is a nice warm-up game but I see one problem:
There is always going to be a team with a student that is just way beyond the level of everyone else, therefore giving that said team an advantage.

Instead of rewarding 1 team, I'd recommend rewarding the top 2 or 3 teams. That way other teams have a fighting chance just in-case there is a team like this.
