British Culture Day - Elementary grades 3/4/5/6
« on: July 31, 2014, 12:42:54 PM »
Here are the materials for my British Culture Day camp.

I've removed the photos from the Tom's life section...because you can show your students your own life in Britain!

It starts with explaining the countries in the UK, showing photos of the UK and then food.  From food, link the full English breakfast to tea and make tea.

After this I was meant to do something on British accents. I never made the video, so it's just trying to work out what the English English word for something is.  Some students know some, and most students figured them out (mostly) correctly.  This section doesn't take 20 minutes, like I allocated for it.  All of the stuff before hand should take longer so this doesn't matter.

After that played some British PE sports.  I did an Egg and Spoon race (with ping pong balls), You're It and Stuck in the Mud.  All worked well! I have uploaded the papers I used to encourage English key expression.  I didn't save my changes from a different English PE lesson I did ages ago...so you'll need to edit these to suit you!  You could also do What's the time Mr Wolf (I'd recommend changing to What time is it, Mr Wolf? or whatever your textbooks expression is!).

Then watched a Mr Bean episode.  Students found it funny.  There was no spoken English in the one I chose.

After that made a 'crest'.  This probably needs at least 30 to 40 minutes.  I cut the students off before they had time to glue them onto nicer paper and things.  I said they should finish them at home.

Then British party. Originally I wanted to make cream cheese and cucumber sandwiches.  I settled on cream cheese and crackers which was fine.  You could swap this for Cathedral city cheddar cheese...a bit more British than the American cream cheese I bought :D

Then British party.  I only did pass the parcel, you'll need to edit the PPT.  I didn't have time for the other games.

The lesson plan and materials list are for reference...I didn't follow them as a rule, and somethings changed and I never updated the plan.  Make this your own, hopefully it'll work as well for you as it did me.

I can't upload the videos.  They're all on YouTube for you to find :)

The intro video is a scene from the Olympic Games (where the Queen skydives).

The bag pipe video is just a random one off YouTube.  I didn't play the whole thing.  For 3/4th I waited until they all put their fingers in their ears.  With 5/6th just played 20 seconds or so before saying how terrible I thought it was too :D

Mr Bean has lots of episodes on YouTube.  I chose one where he went to the swimming pool and cut a few bits out.

I also had some British music.  I just clipconverted these off YouTube.  I had some Spice Girls, One Direction....You can choose your own music!!  I played these during worksheets, break times and the British Party.

Really great ideas. Did you do these in one day or was it spread over the week?

Nice work.
I did a simple little ppt. quiz on the UK. I wasn't sure where to put this but thought this thread would be appropriate.
It's a quiz on the UK you can use to kill 10 or so mins in a class. True or false, or multiple choice for answers.
I used it with Grade 5, putting them in groups each with a whiteboard, holding up their answers and giving points out as it went. All the classes I did this with really enjoyed it.

Added more questions to the quiz above. It's about twice as long now. Also used it with grade 6, and after school level 4 and it's a good level for them too.
You can break it up for use in more than 1 class, that's what I did.
