After School Class: Phonics (Alphabet and Digraphs)
« on: April 11, 2011, 01:06:21 PM »
Hey guys!

Yet another lesson I did for middle school.  This one's a helpful class to review the alphabet, especially the individual sounds that each letter makes.  Granted, this is the ENTIRE alphabet condensed into one two-period lesson, but hey teaching just a few letters a class is kinda boring so let's stick em' all in one :P

First portion is to review the vowels and the difference between long and short vowel sounds.  There's a lot of resources on barryfunenglish.com about this stuff (worksheets, games, whatever) so I used a lot of stuff from there.  There's a quick quick review game to make sure the kids understand what long/short sounds each vowel makes.

Second portion is just a quick review of the consonant sounds. Sped through this pretty fast.

Last portion is a review of digraphs (i.e. two letters that, when put together, make a new sound, like "ph" = "f" or "kn" = "n" etc.).

Then played a bomb game with them that I got from another thread in waygook (no plagerism intended).  I've included it here anyway.

My kids surprisingly like the more "english" focused classes than the "cultural" classes, so this class worked out pretty well.

Enjoy!  :D

These are great worksheets for some of my lower level 5th graders who cant read too good.  I usually teach 3rd graders phonics from basic sounds to full reading of words which takes a few months.  They are usually ahead of some older students.  Rural students usually lack a good foundation for reading.

Thanks for these. They will also be useful for my elementary after school classes which are only for the low level students.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but how do you do this? I try to include some phonics for my 3rd graders, but I find there is not too much time for stuff outside of the text book. Do you do a little each time or whole classes of phonics? How do you go from the basic sounds to reading words?

Awesome, thanks a lot. I have to hurriedly put together a Saturday class for my middle school, and it's for super low level students focusing on phonics and basic sounds and vocabulary. These worksheets should help. Again, thanks!

I feel a bit stupid right now.. but how do I play the bomb game??
I've been examining it for more than 20 minutes now.. and I still can't figure out how to play the game?
What are the students supposed to answer..?

I think they're supposed to answer which sound is used in the beginning of the word. Like in the one with a picture of cheese, they answer if it's a "c" sound or a "ch." The one with the boat, they answer if "ship" is an s or an sh, the phone if it's a p or ph, and so on.

I can't figure out what the picture of the boy and t/th is and the one with the "whale" with choices of w/wh is dubious to me (since almost every English accent has wale/whale and wine/whine pronounced the same).
