Need some fresh reading and writing activities
« on: September 02, 2014, 03:58:56 PM »
Like the title says! I think I've fallen in to a rut with my reading and writing classes. I do a lot of running dictations for those, as well as a rotating whisper game type activity. Any suggestions for reading and/or writing activities that work for you?

I feel your pain! I have to teach only reading at my one school and I am teaching from different textbooks than the regular public school textbooks, so I am always looking for reading activites. One game I sometimes play with gr 5-6 students (medium to high level) I call bet on a sentence game. Ss are divided into teams and I give them a certain amount of money to start with. I then write out a sentence related to the material they just read and the students have to bet whether the sentence is correct or incorrect (can be grammatical, spelling, word order, etc error). They also make a wager with the bet (I set a minimum and taught them the phrase all-in if they want to bet all their "money"). If the sentence is incorrect I usually say if a team can identify the mistake in the sentence I will give them a bonus of $X amount of money. So far I haven't even given out prizes, but the students go nuts for this game and it makes them really think about the content they are reading. I also do a version of telephone, where a student from each team reads a word or a sentence (depending on age/ability) and they whisper the sentence to next student in line. This continues until the last student who will write the sentence down and must show me the sentence. First team with correct sentence written gets a point. Ss really like this one too.

For reading and writing activities, I've always found that my students enjoy playing jigsaw-type games like Sleeping Elephants (lots of good PPTs for that on this site). That incorporates both reading and writing, and it makes sure everyone is doing SOMETHING.

My classes also do a game called Cockroach, where they have to read a dialogue with a partner and win at rock-paper-scissors to move up a level, "evolving" from Cockroach -> Chicken -> Monkey -> Bird -> Human -> Teacher, and the kids are reading the dialogue each time. (At Teacher Level, they have to read the dialogue to you, so you can check their speaking, and then do rock-paper-scissors with you to win).

I played the scramble envelope game recently. It takes some prep work, but students really were engaged throughout the game.

  • Students will work in pairs.
Type out 15-20 sentences (depends on how many pairs you have, but you want more sentences than there are pairs).
Cut each word of the sentence and put them into an envelope labeled with a number (I write the number on each word just in case it gets lost or blown away to the ground).
To make it more difficult, I put in one 'trick' word that should not be included in the sentence. For example, "pizza" "name" "your" "what's" "?"
So you should have 15-20 envelopes with scrambled words inside.
Attached is a PPT explaining to the students how to play. Pretty straight forward. Take one envelope at a time, unscramble the words, write them down on your paper, put the envelope back, and take a new one. Continue until the teacher says to stop. Then, switch papers with another pair and correct answers with a red pen. The pair with the most correct sentences wins.

Another thing to note is that the students must write the correct numbered sentence. So if it's envelope number 14, write that sentence next to #14 on their lined paper.

This is my example from Grade 5, lesson 6.

Here are 2 simple games:

1. sight word bingo on abcya.com and

2. WB writing races - divide Ss into 2 teams with one writer ea. Shout out a word or sentence they have to write. Other Ss can "help" the writer if they get stuck. The fastest, most accurate writer wins.

Enjoy^^

I play telepathy writing (many variations):

1. Have 4 sentences for them to choose from. students individually (or in groups) choose 1 sentence to write down. The sentences disappear one by one. If the sentence they wrote, disappears 1st, then they get 1 point. 2nd, 2 points etc.
A variation is setting a timer, so they have to choose fast.

2. Have students write 1 out of 4 sentences, and make bombs appear over 1 or 2 sentences. those sentences are "out" and the remaining sentence is the winning one. My kids love this one as they sit apprehensively waiting to see if their sentence will remain or not.  Some do get upset though if they get zero points so i prefer assigning at least 1 point for just writing.

I also play the "Find the sticker game". Have, for example, 3 sentences or words on the ppt. Students choose 1 sentence to write. Click on the picture to reveal 1 , 2 or 3 stickers underneath (or however many you want). My kids LOVE THIS!

Codebreakers!

You can use it as individual worksheets or as part of a ppt group game.
They really like it and it ticks both the writing and reading boxes.

Wow...thank you! I'm teaching 4th graders, we're on the unit describing places. I was totally at a loss of what to do with my students. The game they have in the textbook is pretty boring. Cheers.
