Dungeon maze game
« on: September 03, 2014, 04:31:41 PM »
Made this for summer camp to teach up, down, left and right.

Give your students the blank map-grid with the first square/room filled in. Then in turns they can tell you to go up, down, left or right. They then fill in the map grid according to what they see in each room.

To finish the game they have to find four keys, and to find the keys they have to defeat four monsters, either by playing rock scissors paper against you or rolling odds or evens with a dice. If they win they get the key, if they lose then click the black box in the lower right hand corner to go back to the first room.

There are four word puzzle rooms. To start them click on the scroll timer at the side. If they figure out the word, click on the upper right hand corner to reveal the answer and move on. If they don't figure out the word before the timer runs out, click on the bottom right hand corner to send them back to the first room.

edit: in the 'title screen' ppt you'll need to change the hyperlink, so it points to v3 rather than v2.

My students loved this game. I wanted to make another one, and I was wondering where you got the room images from and if there was a dead end room.

Glad you found it useful. I made the rooms in an old video game editor.

By dead end room, do you mean something like this?

That never occurred to me to do that, I spent ages searching old game sprite websites to find the one I used, wasted ages doing it

Which game editor did you use?

Yeah. That's exactly what I was looking for.

Thank's for your help. I'll post the one I'm working on whenever I get a chance to finish it.

Which game editor did you use?

Unreal Tournament, the original one from 1999. If you can find a copy, the editor is easy enough to learn.

I made another game with that engine where the kids wear a blindfold and step onto a platform that floats over a chasm. In their way are dozens of floating boxes. If they hit a box they get knocked off the platform and fall into the chasm. The game is their friends have to tell them when to move left and right. I used Minecraft textures with that one so they'd think it was something new.

Wow I used to make levels on that when I was a teenager!

So you design the room then take a screenshot of it and import it into the ppt?

Yeah, you don't even need to go in game. The pictures are all taken in the editor.

If you look closely in some of the slides you can see the little joystick icon that indicates where you'd spawn in the map. I didn't see it until I had the whole thing finished. It was a rush job for summer camp.

I'll probably do an Egyptian themed 'escape the pyramid' take on the same idea for winter camp this year.

I actually made 1 for summer camp as well, but I settled on a slightly different design as I got driven insane with the number of animations I was having to do. I had a link from zelda animated gif running in and out of the rooms depending on what direction they wanted to go in, I just gave up on it though.

That's funny, as this was originally going to be first person with the kids running through the maze in real time.

However my girlfriend has been compulsively replaying old Zelda games over the last few months, which gave me the idea to make it a static, top-down thing in powerpoint instead.

heh I was trying to go for a choose your own adventure type reading game like deathtrap dungeon or similar.  Weird how the design converged.

I made a choose your own adventure (kind of) game for this lesson.

maybe a dumb question. and i think i figured out it out but just to clarify. you play teacher vs whole class correct? the four keys are for the four locks in the last room.

This is awesome. Nice work.

Thanks a bunch!  A friend told me about this and Zelda was exactly what popped into my head when  he was telling me.

One question:  What is the 8+ in the one room with the monster?

It's more that you just follow the instructions they give you. And yeah, the keys unlock the win screen room.

Thanks. To defeat that monster the kids should roll a die twice and score eight or above.
