Chang chae class
« on: September 18, 2014, 02:51:36 PM »

Hello

I'm looking for some help with what to teach my "chang chae" class, the previous NET seems to have taught them phonics (he left me a handover sheet), but I'm not sure as to what level. They certainly knew the level when I taught them lest week but struggled a little to come up with alternative letters or to "hear" sounds like th- although others did get it quite nicely.

I'm a new teacher so acertaining their level is not clear cut.

Any suggestion on lesson ideas? Also does anyone else know what chang chae is? My co-t aid it is difficult to explain. I only teach 2 of the 4 classes and I go to their homeroom to do so.

Based on what the other classes do when they have  창체 (this is the thing you're talking about, right?), it's kind of a miscellaneous/extra/topics can change type of class. When the 6th grade had it this morning, they had an assembly in the library, then a game tournament, and there was some kind of quiz. They also use it for when the fifth and sixth grades mix together - half of them go outside with the fifth grade teacher for extra P.E., and half stay with the sixth grade teacher for Japanese. It seems pretty random. I've seen them head out to do light maintenance around the school, too - watering plants and such.

You can use this class for phonics, you can probably also pick other topics. You can ask if it's similar to 기초 or 생활, too. My school has me teaching phonics during 기초영어, and the other is a kind of everyday/routine/practical class. I use that one for working up their vocabulary and conversation with specific themes (ex: taste/texture vocab and restaurant roleplays where they asked if this dish was spicy/bland/etc, or game instructions - rewriting the rules for games they knew, then making up their own rules for a board game I drew up).

Edit: Naver says that Changchae is short for "창의적 체험 활동" which google translated to "Creative Activities."

Thank you!

I'm planning now for tomorrows lesson and thinking I could look at increasing their vocabulary for How are you? type vocabulary.

I can't work out how the Korean schools think its a good idea to only teach half of a year group! However, I'm struggling to come up with any other ideas on how to fill this time.

An easy self-contained lesson is to teach them Rock Paper Scissors Spock Lizard*, then have them come up with their own five way RPS rules complete with calls. Takes a full period and the materials are all up here somewhere in the kaempeu section. The beauty of this lesson is that the students will actually go and teach the other half of the class you didn't have anyway, mwahahaha!

* Don't teach 'decapitate'!
