New 2015 Grades 5 / 6 Textbooks
« on: September 19, 2014, 03:34:21 PM »
You can now view the new textbooks for grades 5 and 6 that will be in use next year.

I picked Daekyo for grades 3 and 4 and at first, I was disappointed with them but now I really like them and I think they're the best for my students.
The best thing about Daekyo is that their 'Talk Talk' and 'Listen and Play' are great. Students love the stickers for 'Talk Talk' and the games for 'Listen and Play' are easy and fun. They also have all the materials in the back so there's minimal to no preparation.
I had YBM the year before and their games were confusing, complicated, and no fun. They also didn't have much material in the back so I had to prepare a lot. And the preparation usually went to waste because it was so hard to explain the game (even in Korean) that we had too little time to play the games.

I think I may pick Daekyo again but I've only had time to thumb through everything.

Given Daekyo's 3rd and 4th grade books, I'd be inclined to choose their 5th and 6th grade books as well. I'd venture to say that the 3rd and 4th grade books were a massive improvement over the crap we had back in 2008 with Zeeto and friends.

Anything other than those god-awful Cheonjae books (those of you that have the green and red books know what I'm taking about).

Go to their website and if you have an account, log in and download the samples.

A link would be nice for those of us who don't have it.

I talked to my coteacher and she's telling me that a lot of schools are headed towards
천재 유여범 Cheonjae Yoon Yeobeom and YBM.

I've been using Cheonjae Ham Sunae for 3 years and I was really satisfied with their 3rd and 4th grade books back in 2011, but their subsequent books for 5th and 6th grade in 2012 and 3rd and 4th grade in 2014 have been declining in quality, especially with their last release.

My school is leaning towards select a new publisher and abandoning Cheonjae Ham Sunae.

How about everyone else?

Thanks for your feedback.

Since 2011, our school was pretty comfortable with Cheonjae Ham Sunae.  So in 2012 for 5th and 6th grade, we chose the same publisher again.  There was a slight drop in quality, but because of the materials (e.g. homework, worksheets, tests) the publisher provided, we stuck with them.  Last year, we chose the same publisher again because a majority of schools were using them (about 1/3 in Seoul or possibly the entirety of Korea).  This time, there was noticeable drop in quality and less materials available.

I haven't heard anything about our new books arriving for review.
Last year I had just over an hour to choose. I was given no notice and told that basically 20 minutes after my last class, the English teachers would be having a meeting to choose the new book. It was pretty half-assed, but we got things sorted eventually and ended up chosing Daekyo, which I'm happy with.
I'm wondering how you guys got your hands on the new books. Are you just looking at online copies or do you have physical copies at your school?

Interesting that some NETs get to choose which English textbooks to use -- at my last public school, I wasn't asked to choose the English textbooks. I asked who did at the time, and I was told the head teachers chose them.

My coteachers selected the new books without asking for my opinion. Daekyo was not chosen because they think "storytime is silly". Which is unfortunate for the students as Daekyo is the best book imho.

Honestly, I prefer the old textbooks from my first two years in 2009 to 2010. Right now we are using YBM, and the third and fourth grade ones are so ugly and gross that we make fun of the characters all the time.

I will say that the textbooks are better organized than the middle and high school ones. Those are just a mess, and that is why I don't really use them.

I have not used YBM before, and despite the racist caricatures (which I suppose could do with not being as propagated as it already is) I felt the book content was good this year, full of activities catering to most learner types and not jam-packed with 한글.

My co and I got to look through the new books for next year and Daekyo and YBM were her favorites. Looking through them, I liked YBM more. It seems more interactive, there's more stuff that the kids have to do, and there's a lot more English around - in questions and such. The Daekyo one is typically all in Korean. I also liked the look of the story.
Finally, looking at the chapter titles I like the YBM ones more. The language looks more authentic and there are fewer dread chapters where I'm thinking "why are they learning this obscure piece of language?"

I will admit, though, that the pictures - especially of the black people - leave a lot to be desired.

I only had 30min or so to page through them, and have no idea what the CD will be like.

I actually really enjoyed Cheonjae (함) this year for grade 3's and 4's ( 2013 edition, blue and green book) ~ my school has asked me to choose for 5 and 6  next year and i was leaning towards the same publisher.  My co worker didn't like the look of Daekyo at all.

I can't see a huge noticeable difference between 함 and 윤 for 5th and 6th next year ? I haven't had a chance to use the CD roms - so maybe that would sway my mind. however, right now i'm choosing between 함 and 윤
