Why the Panda is Black and White
« on: September 24, 2014, 11:16:35 AM »
This is just a simple lesson I put together for my middle school After School class.
It's pretty straightforward- I showed three different animal origin stories (panda, koala, giraffe), and then they choose an animal and explain how it got a distinctive feature.
I wanted them to practice writing and vocabulary, and I'm also trying to get them to think more creatively/out of the box.

I ran out of time, but ideally, I wanted them to present their stories when finished, and then we would all choose the best and most creative story.

Hope this is useful for someone.^^

I'm charmed, and I'll use it.  But why is the panda black and white?  Am I missing a link or something here?

According to Chinese folklore:

My apologies! I forgot to explain that the pictures of the animals (panda, koala, and giraffe) in the PPT are hyperlinked to the YouTube videos. Sorry about that.

This is for the Giraffe, from Tinga Tinga, Tales of Africa. It's kind of long, so I started around the 3:30 mark.

Unlike the other ones, this one has no dialogue, so it's especially useful for lower level classes.
