Very small after school class
« on: September 29, 2014, 06:02:42 PM »
I discovered today that have a VERY small after school program with only two fifth grade students so far. They are fairly good at English. I tried to play a speaking game for introductions, but they were too afraid to interact with one another. The girl did not even want to write her name on the boy's paper when I asked her to sign it... because she was too shy. I had activities planned involving music and other highly interactive things for future classes, but they said they do not like singing or anything like that.

Any ideas for two shy 5th graders? I realize individual work here is probably key, but that can get so dry..

I would advise that you continue to use icebreakers until they warm up to each other and to you. Also, one of my afterschool classes is really small and I'm having them keep a journal. You can get really creative but also have it be a very personal thing: have them do drawings, family trees, make menus, do surveys of their families, etc...

I had similar small classes last year.

My school suggested I use workbooks with them, basically books where each chapter has a reading passage they can read out loud, and then they answer workbook questions about the passage. If you find a good one, they can practice reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Shy kids might like something structured like this. I used Reading Juice for higher level elementary kids. Reading Monster might be good for kids who need to work on the basics. Just ask your CT if they can order the books for you. The CT might have some suggestions for workbooks too, and there might be some lying around your school already.

if you have computers in your class, i would recommend code.org.  i use it to teach my 5th graders after school.  basically it is used for teaching instructions and directions right now.  and it's pretty fun
