Man vs. Food
« on: April 12, 2011, 10:51:13 AM »
My students at an all boys middle school wanted a lesson on foods in America so I thought it'd be fun to include clips from Man vs. Food.

They really enjoyed watching all the food but it was pure torture for me, which I should've known. I miss food back at home soooo much!

I started off the lesson with a riddle I do every time. Then I asked students what foods they thought were popular in America to get them going. Gave them some vocab words that I'd use during the lesson. To throw more English in there, I had them unscramble ingredients to pizza and hamburgers. It's included on the worksheet. Then I'd present the food challenge, explain the weight and measurements (in kg and cm) and show the video. At the end, I had them make their own challenge. I saw some funny ones. Choco Pie, Noodles, pots of kim chi.

Enjoy! And let me know how it goes for you.

Pretty awesome PPT.  I used some of the Man vs. Food videos during winter camp for my elementary students.  That monster burger really shocked them!

I think my kids will get a kick out of this lesson, they're all keen about learning about American food ~ thanks for sharing with all of us! :)

I'm also curious if you had time to show the entire first video...I suppose I could always stretch the lesson into 2 classes. That's never a bad thing  ;)

God I want some pizza so bad now...

This is brilliant! I had another food related lesson all set to go but my jump drive didn't work today! So I took my few precious free moments to upload your idea. Fantastic. Thanks so much!

Just search "MAN VS. FOOD" on YouTube...there are heaps of clips that come up that are only snip-its/final challenges (which are usually the most grotesque) of under 5mins.

what a great idea!  i've got a ton of kids asking about foods in america, they'll love this.  hopefully they don't get the wrong idea and think all americans eat like this all the time.

This is awesome! I can't wait to use it in class today!

I also tweeked it a small bit. The first video, you had to go to the end and watch the second part of it to watch the carnivore Pizza. I have inserted all of the videos into the ppt. I only inserted the second part and deleted the first part to the pizza one, though. I'm uploading it on here for anyone that may want to use this one, too.

Has anyone used any clips by Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations for traveling lessons?  How did it go?

We also like to use Andrew Zimmern's 'Bizarre Foods'. Season 4 episode 2 he comes to Seoul and eats some things that even my kids won't touch.

that is awesome! i might use it if i can figure out where in my LP. As a side note i have been to 4 of the restaurants on that show. The amish one is about 40 minutes from my house back home and WELL worth the drive.

For some reason the videos aren't showing up when I play the PPT but I can see them in Edit mode...maybe something to do with Active X?...Any advice on this?...

Oh man! If only I had an oven here to attempt making something similar to that. Great lesson btw. North American food just isn't the same here as back home.

Another great idea! I love Man vs. Food. Wish I could actually involve food in a lesson somehow though! Also man what where those guys thinking, they must have felt terrible after eating all of that. haha
